Thanked: 3Just getting started
Hello,
My name is Tyrone and I'm just now getting in the straight razor "game". I have not yet bought a straight razor or really anything that I will need and would love some advice. I've been reading some stuff on the forums the past day or so and I thought I might as well join up and become a member!
So if anyone is willing to help a beginner out with some recommendations I would greatly appreciate it.
I would also be interested in buying a razor or equipment off of someone on the site since I do see that there is a classified sections.
*A little bit about me, I am 20 years old and work for AT&T handling account escalation and retention calls and go to school full time at OSU majoring in history to become a high school teacher and then move into administration.*
Regards!

Hi Tyrone - welcome to the forum.
Your first thought regarding buying a shave ready razor from a member is an excellent one, and there is in fact a great classified section here on the site. I've purchased quite a few razors from it and each has been fantastic, have a look here, and if you have any questions, feel free to ask away.
One thing to remember, the site doesn't do valuations on razors and stuff.

Thanked: 3Thanks for the welcome Phrank!
I have always been inclined to buy things second hand, theres a history about it that I like that you don't get when you buy something new. I'll probably end up buying one here within the next few days. Not really sure how to tell the difference between the types or what it is that I would need in a straight razor but from reading I am slowly learning.

Buying a razor from the classifieds is a safe bet to get a truly shave ready razor as to the brand , don't worry about what you find in there just go with what interests you and is in your budget, these guys won't steer you wrong ,, and also you can use the search button to find the do not buy list of razors, then you'll need to learn how to strop and shave, pick up some soap and a brush , keep in mind there are lots of inexpensive stuff to start out to see if your going to keep at it, with that in mind your first strop tends to get nicked up till you learn that one,,so be warned before you purchase an expensive one,, read a lot on here. , the beginners section has tons of advise and watch plenty of videos , then go slow , one area of your face at a time till you become comfortable with the blade. Good luck and look to see if there is a mentor in your area Tc

Hi and welcome. Start your reading in the beginner's section of the library. That will answer a lot of your questions on the basics. A round point 5/8 or 6/8 razor is recommended for your first razor. Good luck and any questions feel free to ask.

Thanked: 18Welcome. I'm fairly new myself. You are doing what I wish I had done at your age. Get a good straight or 3 and never NEVER NEVER buy another cartridge razor ! You will throughout your life save hundreds...nay thousands of dollars in shaving costs..or maybe end up just pitiful like me with rad sad and had lol. But try to take it slow while learning and you will persevere.

Thanked: 3Slow and steady wins the race right?
Nodakjohns, I'm glad I decided to go this route and get a straight razor I probably spend around 9-15 dollars a month on disposable razor blades not to mention the wasted plastic and metal that goes into my trash every month.
