Thanked: 0so here it comes
So here goes the introduction.
I've been shaving with a straight for about a year now. I really like it and the shave usually goes allright, altough honesty makes me admit that in tmes of hurry I grab the DE for speed.
I came back to SRP because I've noticed the edge was getting less sharp over time. So I take it honing is in place and the search began and..... aaargh everybody has a different opinion about coticules, arkansas, Nawari, etc.
So It seems i'm here to stay.
I would anyway, because over the past two years I have become quite a shaving-afficianado.
I hope in the future to share some gained wisdom with everybody out there.
for now I wish you all a happy, inspiring ans BBS-proof 2010.

Thanked: 0Very much a newbie
Hello everyone!
I just joined and am a complete newbie when it comes to straight razor shaving. In fact I've never even shaved with a safty razor - been shaving with electrics since birth.
Currently, I've got this love/hate thing going with my morning torture device (Braun 8595). Sometimes it works reasonable well and sometime it doesn't work at all (30+ minutes for a horrible shave). I've tried new screens, blades, blocks, and all manner of pre-shave products. I wake up every morning hoping for a "good shave day" but often I'm disappointed. All this has led me to the Straight Razor Place.
I bought Lynn's DVD and watched it a few days ago. I read the entire Beginners Guide and about a million posts on these forums. Long story short, I think I've finally screwed up the nerve to take the plunge. Nothing would make me happier than to throw by electric razor in a field and go "Office Space" on it.
Since I know nothing about straight razor shaving I guess I'm looking for a good starter blade/strop/kit. Any advice for a newbie would be appreciated.
Thanks.

Hello Straight Razor Place folks!
I restarted shaving with a double-edged blade after a long time away in July of '09, joined Badger and Blade by September, bought my first straight just before Thanksgiving, and now am the proud owner of five of the little fellas, shave with nothing else, so I figured I'd make myself known over these parts.
I have multiple acquisition disorders, all of which I'm trying to bring under control, although compared to some of the collections of shave gear folks have posted at B&B, I'm just a piker. Even so, a man's got to know his limitations, as Harry Callihan said in Magnum Force. I was not made to be a big collector. Besides, I've yet to master straight razor technique, so getting a lot of a razors seems....premature, at best....
Along with having respectable technique, I'd like to learn about honing and restoration.
And that gentlemen, is a rough sketch of the history and status of this early middle-aged man's enthusiasm for shaving and the straight razor.

Thanked: 0Hello all,
I've been looking at purchasing a straight razor for sometime and this year my other half promised me a straight razor for xmas. Rather than get any old one I told her to wait while I did some research over the net and I've stumbled upon this site.
I've zero experience with straight razors but first impressions tell me that all the info I need will be on here somewhere and, going on most of what I've read so far, although using a straight razor seems tricky it's worth persevering.
My thanks to those that have contributed and shared thier knowledge of buying , maintaining and using a straight razor on this site. It makes things much easier for the noobs like myself!
Regards,

Hello All,
After living with an unexplainable draw to straight shaving for most of my life I finally waded in with a barber/disposable straight razor, brush, oil and soap.
I found a couple of cheap Zeepk blades with strop and hone on ebay before I found this site. I've tried honing and stropping the Zeepk's but with no success.
I'm cruising the Buy/Sell section of this site for a "beginner's" kit - blade, strop, hone. I am interested in learning how to hone.
If you know/have a beginner's setup for sale, please let me know.
Great site, btw!

Good evening gentlemen. My name is Tom, and I’m a 19 year old college student from Rochester, MN. I’ve been shaving with a straight razor for about a week now. I just moved from doing just one WTG pass to doing one WTG pass & one XTG. It went well, but I could use a better soap/cream and a good aftershave balm. Thanks to all of you on this wonderful forum for getting me started right.

Sundance,
Welcome to Straight Razor Place...
Besides the Buy/Sell forum at SRP, check out some of the merchants who advertise on the website. Many of them offer package deals on quality str8 razors and strops that won't send you to the poor house. Some even include professional honing of the razor as part of the purchase price...Something I consider a must for any new razor that I buy. Hones are not included as part of these package deals. But SRP can provide you with a wealth of information about hones and honing so that when you purchase your first honing stone(s), it will be based on a wealth of excellent accumulated knowledge here at SRP.
Take care and happy shaving."Age is an issue of mind over matter. If you don't mind, it doesn't matter." Mark Twain
