Introducing myself
I just joined and am thinking about making the jump to a straight razor. I have been using a Merkur safety razor for a number of years, but admire the beauty of a good straight razor and the skill necessary to use it for a superior shave.

Thanked: 0hello all
my name is kirk, my wife bought me a straight razor for xmas, tried a shave with it a day or so ago then realised very quickly it was not shave ready, it was purchased here (no surprises in our house lol) i think it is a generic chinese jobby.
so i now await a hone and an alum block :-) and i have some Col Conk Lime on its way (the wilkinson sword my wife got me just will not lather in the hard water we have)
im hoping to get a local barber shop to give me a masterclass, if i can talk them round anyway lol

Thanked: 0Follow up note from newbie
I see notes from several new members and just want to to add a welcome aboard to each of you. I have recently converted to the DE and now have begun with the purchase of several SRs. The ones I have so far are vintage and I'll be looking to send them in for some work. Everyone enjoy!!

Thanked: 1Well my name is BrSpiritus, actually Louis and I am an American living in Davao City, Philippines half the year and working as Night Watchman at a Salmon Cannery in Alaska. I've always been interested in SR and I have one I bought from Cutlery World years ago. It's marked Solingen but not maker marked however the blade etching matches some makers I know are Solingen so I'm confident it is not pakistani but really German if only a 2nd quality blade. Anyhow it shaved well enough for me when I bought it but it's in desperate need of a honing now due to a combination of non-use and bad stropping technique. Ah well we all have to learn somewhere. For me I'll have to really wait until next year to start collecting the things I need. Other than that I have a fascination with perfumery, and am working on a real old world style Bay Rhum Aftershave using ingredients I can find in the Philippines.

Thanked: 1Hello
Hi everyone, I've been lurking these forums for some time now reading and researching, as well as some other straight shaving sites. I finally went for it and bought a straight razor from the classifieds here, and I am just waiting for it to arrive along with my Filly. I'm pretty excited for there arrival in the mail. In the mean time I have been looking around the local stores for a brush and shaving soap/cream, not much luck at the moment but I'm not giving up so easily.
Looking forward to getting to know you all and to having a great shave!

Thanked: 0Just to say hello
Hello to everyone. My name is Paul and I've been registered here since last June. However I've never done anything else since then. I've always wanted to shave using a straight, but just never took the first step. I guess the want never overcame the hesitation or the fear. I've been wet shaving with a DE for almost a year, and have become quite good with the DE, and am always able to come away with at least a DFS. A few weeks ago I made the move and bought a straight. I bought the Feather AC, I know I guess just about all of you will say "that's not a real straight", but I've got to say I just don't want to get involved with the strop, and the associated upkeep of a regular straight. I hope the fact of my using the Feather doesn't exclude me from being a part of this forum, as I believe their is much I can learn.
I've done 3 shaves so far with the Feather AC, and they've been pretty good. A few nicks, one cut on the first stroke of the first shave, and some razor burn, but other than that I find the overall shave quite good. I've got to work on my technique more, something that I'm sure will improve as time goes on. Just my having watched most of the video's on straight shaving has taught me much needed info. and boosted my confidence level to higher levels.
Who knows, as I dive deeper into straight shaving, I'll more than likely get into all the other needed gear.
As for myself, I'm a 60 year old retired police officer, who now works on occasion as a bartender. I'm a U.S. Air Force Vet. who served as an Air/Security Policeman, from 1966 to 1970.
