Quality Enthusiast
I have been reading posts for months now and have decided to jump in and begin sharing. As a boy I can remember a peculiar purchase that my grandad made and had in his basement. It was an antique barber's chair. My brothers and I used to quickly head to the basement when we arrived for a quick ride on the old thing. I never asked my grandad why he bought the thing, but I can recall that he left that day with the intention of buying a car for one of my uncles and instead came back with it.
As an adult I think back to those times and have very fond memories. A few months back I too made an odd purchase - you guessed it - a barber's chair. In fact I have three for a downstairs bar or man cave. Two originally from the Palmer House hotel in Chicago and another 1930's Koch. This trip down memory lane brought me to a fascination and enthusiasm for a quality experience. I have purchased a few old straights, 1940's gillette double edge, some brushes to assist me in my experience. Last week I even went to Bath and Body works to purchase Proraso under a different name.
Anyway, I have had some quality and some not so quality shaves with my double edge and I am looking forward to a great experience with my straight razor if I can ever get it right. More than anything I want to pass along a sense of quality to my son who watches me enjoy the learning and frustration that comes with shaving and life. I look forward to learning lots from all of you veterans.

Howdy,
My name is Ruben and I should be receiving my first SR any day now. I'm excited about using a SR for the first time. I'm glad that Jim Ayers from Vintage Blades told me about this place. There is a wealth of information for me to look over.
Here's to happy shaving.

Hi. I'm Mike, and I'm a shavaholic. I started simply enough. Someone bought me a nice tube of shaving cream and said, "here, try this out." Next thing I knew, I had a couple of brushes, some soaps, some creams and a few DEs. I tried cleaning up my act. Really, I did. I sold off all of my razors but one. Same with the soaps, creams and brushes. I kept the best and was doing quite well, until one day, it hit me. What about straights? Well, here I am again, climbing a new learning curve, but having fun doing it.
In all seriousness, great site y'all have here. Lots of great info and helpful people. Thanks for the advice I've gotten so far and I'm sure to get in the future.

Thanked: 0Hello!
Hi there everyone. I thought I'd start posting here since I've been browsing the forums for a few days and am getting started in straight razor shaving. I am a 21 y/o college student and last year got into wet shaving. I can't believe the money I've saved using my safety razor instead of those cartridges, and I wanted to branch into the world of straight razor shaves as a collecting hobby. I enjoy my shaving ritual and think it could be much improved with an extra boost of "old-timey" shaving. I haven't gotten to jump in quite yet due to budget limitations, being a poor college student and all, but I'm slowly adding things to my collection to work towards my first straight razor shave!

Hello Everybody...
Hello everybody...
Allow me to introduce myself...I am a life-long wet shaver who recently began DE shaving with a badger shaving brush and a quality shaving cream. It has done wonders for my face...No more razor burn, razor bumps, etc. The condition of the skin on my face has noticeably improved in the short time--less than six months--I converted to a double edge.
I always enjoy those special occasions when I have time at the barber shop to request a shave by my barber. The ritual of the reclined chair, hot towel covering my face, application of the warm lather...Oh my!!!
Having read somewhere on the internet that shaving with a DE razor is the next best thing to a straight razor shave, I now I want to explore the presumed pleasure and maximum benefits of straight razor shaving with my own hands--instead of my barber's.
I just ordered a Dovo "Black Star" Red Pakkawood razor, 3" latigo strop and Lynn Abrams' DVD on straight razor shaving as an Xmas present to myself. The anticipation of unwrapping them on Xmas day is almost too much to bear. I look forward to my first straight razor shave sometime shortly after December 25th.
Wish me luck...

Congrats on that purchase! I'm assuming from SRD? If so, even better with the free honing for life deal! I had my eye on that same razor after I purchase my Dovo "Best Quality", but instead ended up ordering another "Best Quality" for consistency since I'm fairly new to this, plus it was a little cheaper so I had some extra $$ to go after some good soaps and what not. You got some will power waiting til after Christmas to open it up and try it out, kudos on that!
