Hey, I'll give this a go since I think yer new if you don't have any friends!
I'm Raymond. I like sharp stuff. But sometimes I like stuff that isn't sharp, like windshield wipers and well, girls...
I've been drunk, have a beard, and am usually educated but I can't promise anything. I'll move along if that'll be trouble.
I like fancy straight razors, Japanese rocks and flashlights. And ghost stories. I love ghost stories.
Oh yeah, I'll never claim to know anything but my opinion.

Hello SRP faithful.
My hat is off to all who have gone before me in the straight razor world, this sight is indispensable and the goodwill from its users...commendable. Not only have I been shaving for the past month with a straight razor but I attribute my success with the tool to this community.
I live in Pasadena CA and currently attend grad school. Used to be a finish carpenter in Santa Barbara - did a lot of work in Montecito to be exact. A favorite project was building a spiral staircase banister with Duane Johnson that cladded existing iron railing. We cut up 4"x8"x6' pieces of walnut into 3/32" strips for flex. Wove the ends together and dry fit everything to see how it would fit. Took it all apart, epoxied each section with west systems and clamped everything into place. I digress, the best part was hand finishing the walnut rail's profile with a scraper - no router could do what a scraper could in that situation.
Same thing goes for the straight razor, no mach-whatever can do what they can and all the artistic, skill-laden elements of shaving are canceled as well as one's sense of accomplishment. I am no longer deluded by the fear mongering of the disposable safety razor marketing cult (hyperbole). Free at last, free at last, thank God almighty we are free at last (MLK Jr.)!
Another random tidbit... I used to smoke a pipe and cigars but now I have life insurance.Last edited by cfarris1978; 12-12-2009 at 10:46 PM.

Hey All! the names Rich and come to think of it, Even though i've been trolling around here for about three or so months, i don't think i've ever had a nice "hey! I'm new!" post. Well, let's see... I'm a youngin' 20 ripe years of age thats always had a fascination for old things. Love pocket watches, vests, a good hat here and there, and came to Boston for education due to the fact that its more fun for me to troll around town in a topcoat than it is to wear mesh shorts. I'm a 3rd year Chemical Engineering student, and right now i REALLY should be finishing up a fluid mechanics tech paper. But.... study breaks are a necessity
.
I've been straight shaving for about 3-4 months now, and I love it and the challenges it gives me. Still looking for that perfect shave, the one that doesn't kill my neck afterwards when i try and get it BBS. I'm currently in posession of two straights, a Dovo Best Quality 6/8 that i started with, and a C. Freidrich Ern 5/8 that i picked up from the classifieds. I love my TOBS Sandlewood, and my brush is a no-name badger that my family got for me over a year ago, before i had any interest in straights. Alternating between Witch Hazel and an Alum block for an aftershave, and use some Nivea after-shave balm due to the cold dry weather up here.
As for my troubles, i'm still trying to figure out how to approach my shave differently based on the length of hair i've got. When i go about 6-7 days without shaving, (Visible Vagabond) then i've got no problem shaving, and I can wipe the hair right off my face using conditioner as a preshave and a nice TOBS lather. However, when i try to touch up my face 2 days later, i just can't seem to get the shave right, and must be screwing up my passes with the grain, because once i start to try against the grain on my neck, i get those little tugging cuts that close up with cold water, but leave your neck sore as can be. Both razors are shave ready, and well, i know this because of their performance on my caveman face, but for some reason, the sophisticated face seems to have some struggles with the straight. Any suggestions?

Hi All,
My name is Jim. I am an electrician from Florida. I have always been interested in SRs since I was a kid and saw my grandfathers. But it hasn't been until recently that I have done anything about it. I currently have 7 razors and they all need some sort of repair. I believe that I have put, maybe $60 into collecting them. I am going to try submitting an entry into the newbie restore contest.
I haven't tried shaving with a SR yet, but I hope to soon. Just need to get a razor shave ready and get a strop. I have been out of work for a while and my wife doesn't look at a strop as a necessity. Although I bet there are plenty of gents here that would. Maybe sometime after the holidays.
I found this site as soon as I started looking for information about SRs and haven't even looked for anothere site. This site is awesome! I don't think there is anything about SRs that isn't here. Also, the people here with their knowledge, friendliness and generosity is just AMAZING!!!.
Thanks to all members for making this site what it really is!!!
Happy Holidays to all!!!

Greetings I'm Dave. I live in Ventura County, CA.
I retired 2 years ago. I am now a professional volunteer. I am a Registered Yoga Teacher and teach yoga at the Wellness Community for people with cancer. I am a hospice volunteer where I work directly with people at the end of life. I am a dharma mentor in the Prison Dharma Network, teaching meditation to the incarcerated.
I view shaving as a sport. Each day I want to have a "personal best" shave. To make this happen, I naturally need a few razors, some nice stones and my room, that my wife of 22 years simply refers to as "The Lab".
This site has given me an excellent education on all things shaving.
Cheers!

welcome everybody new, and not so new here. it's pretty nice to read something personal about you.
(please don't forget to include your date of birth, social security number, and mother's maiden name, as well as few credit/debit card numbers, they come in handy when one of us needs another razor/strop/hone/brush....)
