Thanked: 2Hi guys. I'm Josh from the OKC metro area. I'm ex-military (4 years active U.S. Army Infantry) and a war vet. Currently, i work a medium pay job that pay for the booze and bills so no complaints here.
I've always had problems with shaving since i started, especially in the Army. Electric razors are crap and mach 3's gave me nasty razor burn and bumps and somehow still didn't give a passable shave for inspections. I remembered my late grandfather shaving with a straight razor and swearing by them. I also, remember him trying disposables for about a month and having the same problems i have, then switching back. Watching him straight razor shave seemed more like a ritual than a chore, to the point of a zen like experience.
I finally decided to go all in and buy a kit. I am actually working out the business end of buying a razor and the poor man's strop kit from a member here (Larry Andreassen). I was relieved to find out i didn't really need to drop $270 on a brand new Dovo kit just to try my hand at this.
I would like to say kudos on such a great site and all the vealth of knowledge you guys have provided to anyone interested in SR shaving. I'm definitely looking forward to making a few good friends here and learning alot!

Thanked: 416Thanks for jumping in guys its great to have you all here! I hope you will find this place to be a second home as I and so many of the other members have. And all you guys who have been here a while jump in to welcome these new folks and help them with any questions they may have. This is a great opportunity for you experienced guys to help these new folks find their way around and pass on that knowledge you've spent all this time learning.

No set answer to that one, Mike. It can depend on how often the razor is used, your hair type, your stropping technique and probably a few other things too. I've only been at this for 7 months or so and so far I haven't had to re-hone any of my razors because I've touched up the edges on a Barber's Hone, or pasted strop when I've felt them tugging. The general consensus is that if you're not using any kind of touch up method the average number of times your razor needs to be re-honed is 2-3 times a year, but as I said it all depends and could be more, or less, often than that.

Hey Josh,
Glad to meet ya. Larry was the first guy on here I contacted about getting a razor. He's a good guy and works hard at making things cost less for the newbies by focusing more on functionality than aesthetics. The poor man's strop kit he recently put together is a great buy and for that price you're not out much if you don't like it and he's got good deals on razors too. Quick tip on that though is if you get tired of using the counter-top leather strop and feel like you want a hanging one, you could probably ask him to make you one pretty cheaply, or you could also use an old leather belt or pair of jeans from what he told me.
Happy shaving!

Thanked: 96Howdy
My name is Jason and I am from the west-central desert of Utah (a balmy -19 this morning) I am a heavy equipment operator waiting for the next pipeline to start. I have been wanting to go straight for years, I finally made the plunge after coming across this site. I want to thank everyone here for all the time and effort put in to making this forum the place to be. I must be one of the people with an addictive personality, since it took me all of 2 days to allow the aquisition disorder bug to bite me. I have bought 5 razors, a filly strop, a TM latigo strop(for use once the filly breaks my bad habits), the norton set(200/1000,4000,8000), a nakyama stone(I am afraid I didnt spend enough to get high quality), a velvet edge barber hone(any good?) and have been looking for a good coticule, I have been warned by paypal that I am about to reach my spending limit. I blame the post office for my aquisitions since they held my filly for a week while in transit, so all the time I could've spent practicing my stropping, which looks so easy in the videos but so far seems to be something I will be working at for quite a while, was spent lurking here gaining new ideas about what to buy and then searching for them. Thanks again for the wealth of info on this site.
