My name's Brian, I'm a programmer, lojbanist (see: lojban) and Canadian. I'm currently attending university for a major in computer science. My razor and strop got to me 3 days ago. I've slowly worked up to being able to shave my entire face fairly well (good shave, no cuts... yet) WTG and ATG, and my stroping isn't too terrible. I credit all my success at this art so far to Jockeys for his awesome videos.

Thanked: 6Hi,
I'm Brett. I have been getting my haircuts with straight razors around the ears for years by my barbers. I'm in the military and need to keep short haircuts and have found this most cost effective.
Recently I switched barbers do to driving time. My new barber pressured me to try a face shave after a long weekend. After the first one, I was hooked. The next two haircuts I had the barber shave my face as well.
Of course, this led me down the path of.......how can I do this myself. My new barber (a Russian immigrant) (who seem to be the only barbers in Phoenix who use straight razors) offered to sell me one. They use the ones that take disposable blades. I bought one from him and went to Walgreens and bought the blades. I cut myself pretty bad the first few uses and progressively got better.
This led me down the path of internet research and I found a 5 piece set at nashville knife that featured a Dovo 5/8 razor, strop, a cake of soap, badger brush and stand. I bought it and selected the pre-honed by Lynn Abrams version.
While I waited for delivery, I bought Lynn's world of straight shaving dvd and realized it was a lot more complicated than I thought. I youtubed videos and tried to prepare for my first true straight razor shave.
I received my set and set to shaving the next day. I tried stropping as I had seen on the internet and Lynn's video. I of course screwed up once and flipped the wrong way and cut into my strop. I didn't get a good shave and figure this must be why.
I tried again the following night and managed not to cut myself but still didn't achieve the close shave like my barber and I had to go over it with my old gillete sensor.
I did more research and think I might have screwed up the blade. It does not pass the hair pop test from my wifes hair brush. I am going to try to strop on the canvas side tonight and then leather and see if it helps but I'm afraid I'm going ot have to send it in for re-honing after just 4 uses.
Last time it dragged across my face. I addes some water to the lather thinking that might be the problem but it just made the razor glide OVER the beard. I found that increasing my angle helped but still didn't get as close as a disposable blade and I know that isn't how it should work.
Any advice? Do I just need to strop more or should I send it back to Lynn?

Hello my name is Rod I'm a M.E.major at Texas tech and should really be doing some fluid mechanics studying right now. I have been lurking on this site for a while but just had to register for the Christmas giveaway. I recently purchased a challenge cutlery straight and am in the process of obtaining a strop. So that I may begin the upward climb on the learning curve of straight shaving

Hey guys my name's Cody, I ran into this forum a few times while searching online for some information on SRS. I'm quite new to it; I've been using a straight for about 2 weeks, it's been alright so far.
Right now I'm using a $5 Fromm "hair shaper" from Sally's Beauty Supply that takes disposable blades, I recommend staying away from these, for newbies especially (even though I am one). It's not too forgiving, plus you're dealing with two spike ends (one on the heel, one on the toe). I'm currently awaiting delivery of my newly purchased Dovo Best Quality 5/8 round point full hollow ground (and a bunch of other extra stuff too) from SRD thanks to DannyWonderful, Undream, and BingoBango's comments regarding the free honing for life as well as the great deals going on there in a thread I stumbled across in my research: Straight Razor Place Forums » The Barber Shop » Newbies Corner » Getting started on the cheap?
The allure of one day being able to get an irritation free, smooth shave is what drew me here. I have terribly thick, tough facial hair and I've had mostly bad experience with shaving for over half of my life; believe it or not I had to start shaving at about the age of 10. I've tried electric foil razors as well as electric beard trimmers/shavers, the round head rotary foil ones, disposable 1,2, and 3 blade razors, and even the 20 blade cartridge razors with batteries, vibrations, lights, and toaster ovens built in to them, none of which seemed to work right for me. So now I'm here.
Other than the shaving thing I'm a tobacco, beer, whiskey, and scotch enthusiast (to my pocket book's extent that is) and a musician. (wouldn't have seemed so bad if all the drunk rock stars of days passed had put it that way huh?)

Hello
Gentlemen/Ladies,
I have recently joined and wanted to say hello. I have never used a straight. The last two weeks have been weird for me.
1. Wife gives me C.O. Bigelow cream for B-day
2. First shave I realize I have been missing something
3. Second shave I realize I don't know how to lather the cream
4. Two weeks of reading later, I will probably purchase a Dovo from Lynn before the lifetime hone deal is over. (Suggestions welcome)
One question that I have a problem finding an answer to; How often do you hone your razor?
Thank you for the informative forum!

Thanked: 2Hi all,
I'm Jerry and am in Ohio. Started reading the articles and posts here a couple months ago. Great information, and advice to be found here in mass quantities. Was instantly hooked on straight shaving, love that BBS shave, and was actually able to learn how to hone my razor before learning how to shave with it! Still trying to shave for a week without nicking myself. Had to learn how to hone after dropping a brand new Dovo in the sink. Damn... but feels good to correct my mistake and get it shave ready again. The acquisition disorders are definitely setting in, I already have a 7 day set of razors in a display box, 3 strops and am trying out some pastes. Looking forward to mastering a new hobby.
