    Thumbs up First Time Post!

Was my breathing really that noticeable?

Name's Andrew and I'm from Tampa FL. Been interested in straight razors for a while but really didn't take the full plunge until recently. This board has been a wealth of really helpful information (as well as a haven of civil discourse in an otherwise sea of retarded internet white noise).

Lynn's introductory videos as well as his tips for first time shavers have been invaluable. I've also gotten a lot of help from my old school (Master) Barber that has given me a lot of first hand pointers on stropping and getting to know the best ways to "attack" (poor word choice?) my face when shaving.

I'm also happy to pass-on that I completed my first entire-face WTG shave tonight with no cuts and only slight razor burns around my Adam's apple.

Hey, my name is Jarrod, I live in WA state. I've been shaving with a straight razor for about 9 months and I love it. I've only got the two razors my wife gifted me in April for my birthday, but hopefully Santa will bring me a hone set for Christmas and I can start getting into honing and restores.

Hi, my name is John and I have not even received my first Cutthroat and I think I am already addicted.
I have bought a shave ready razor off of the classifieds and several junky ones off ebay to practice restoring, honing, etc. With the hopes some of them will be good everyday razors. I hope to have a matched set of seven razors for each day of the week, but for now since I have no idea what style, size, or brand suits me I am trying to get a feel for lots of different razors till I find the right kind for me.

    Default Jumping in from Sonoma

Alex here in Sonoma. This has got to be one of the most active forums on the net, and for good reason. Funny how something so simple and necessary as shaving can bring out so much passion and thrill from such a wide (worldwide) range of men of different ages, occupations and backgrounds.

I started shaving with a straight razor in 1975, my 5th and last year in the commune. I have always loved sharpening whether it be screwdrivers, axes, saws, plane blades, knives, etc. Sharpening my own razors is one of the most satisfying because of the instant feedback and rewards if offers the moment I use it. I love the way it ties me in with my grandfather and the Gilmores before him and touches my nerve of desired self-sufficency.

Doc, you have opened a flood or responces with this invitation, well done. To you, Lynn and all of the moderators who float this boat, let the wind always be at your back. Alx

    Hey Jim,

Nice to meet you! I saw your post here regarding the money situation, I'm sorry; that's quite unfortunate. Times are hard right now, so I did want to let you know though that there are some cheaper alternatives to buying a strop until your money situation improves. I used an old pair of jeans for a while, you could even sew up a strip of jean material so that you can tie one end of your jean strop to your towel rack if you would like. Old leather belts work as well and they already have the buckle which can easily be used to secure them to a towel rack. I believe one other guy on here said he uses the inside of a cereal box as a strop! Hell, some guys have told me that in the old days would just use their boots!

Also, there's a guy that goes by LarryAndro that sells a "Poor Man Strop Kit". It comes with a small leather "strop", a two-sided treated balsa wood "strop", and a year's supply of both Chromium oxide powder and Ferrous oxide powder for the balsa. He also includes instructions on how to use your poor man's strop set.

    Good luck!

    Default Howdy!

    Howdy folks.

I'm new to this board but been straight razor shaving for several years. About 8 now, I suppose.

I like the shave, as well as the history, carrying on the legacy of how the men that came before me shaved.

Hello. I'm David, and I'm a razor addict.

Been straight shaving for a while now, but just joined the boards a few months back. Like several others who have posted here, I suppose I'm just a sucker for traditionalism. I started straight shaving mostly for the traditional novelty, but was quickly hooked. I managed to fight off the RAD until I stumbled upon our fine board here; a few months, five new razors, one new hone and one new strop later... well, you know how it goes.

You guys are the best. In my short time on the board, I've already met a great restorer and two great local guys who do great honing. I look forward to continuing the online discourse and appreciate all the support!

Hello everyone. Like MrDavid I can be a sucker for tradition. Plus a really good shave is like a fine whiskey or a medium-rare prime rib - it's indulgent and relaxing while still retaining its inherent manliness. I'll leave it at that lest I start sounding like a Dos Equis commercial.

I've been interested in straight razor shaving for a while, but never seriously due to the initial expense. My main passion is cooking, and after the local "knife sharpener" mangled the bejeebers out of my chef's knife I bought a set of water stones. I also got sick of paying $20 for 8 Mach 3 blades and have been settling for the short beard + stubble look using cheap electric clippers.

Then I stumbled across this place, and now I'm shopping the classifieds for a razor. Nothing wrong with an early Christmas present to yourself, right?
