Default Hello, SR's here we go!

Hi Guys, My name is John, I'm from Southampton, UK.
My lovely lady has bought me a beautiful Dovo stainless steel ebony straight razor and strop for Christmas, something I've wanted to get in to for quite a while.
As I have read here quite a bit, I got straight into it and trashed my face badly! Although I already own a good badger hair brush and some Mitchell's wool fat shaving soap, I soon learned that I did'nt have all the tools I would need and now own a 4000/8000 Norton Honing stone, and as I have ruined my strop (it has more nics than my face) I have ordered a large Illinois linin/leather strop to complete my equipment list.
I have had four shaves now and my face is not nearly as bad as it was on boxing day, but I am still not happy with my results.
I hope to learn lots here, but any quick tips and advise would be greatly appreciated! Many thanks, and may I say what a great site this is!!!
Here's to becoming a complete addict like so many of you clearly are!!

    Well here goes.

I signed up last night in a effort to learn more about Straight Razor Shaving.

It goes like this I have allways thought that a Straight Razor was THE coolest thing EVER. Actually I was a bit dissapointed when it came time to learn how to shave and I was handed a Bic. lol Well fast forward over 20 years and my interest has been renwed, spurned by $25-8 packs of Fusion blades that still can't shave worth a damn.

I look to learn a bunch seeing as it is WAY more involved than I thought. I'm going to do A BUNCH more reading than posting. But don't worry I'm not afraid to ask questions.

    Johnnyboy356,

    Welcome to SRP...

You've certainly come to the right place if you want to improve your str8 razor technique and learn new skills such as honing.

In addition to the individual forums, where you can pick up important information, SRP has a wiki that is loaded with information, even streaming videos about stropping, etc.

    Again, welcome aboard.

    Hi firefighter. Welcome to SRP...

We're all happy to hear that you've decided to take the plunge into str8 razor shaving.

Str8 razor shaving may appear to be a bit daunting at first, but don't worry. There is lots of useful information at SRP, including a wiki, that will assist you in doing so. As a newbie myself, I found that str8 razor shaving was a lot like riding a bike. It sounds a lot more complicated than it really is. Just take it slow at first. Ease into the process, shaving a small part of your face--starting with the sides of your face--until you have shaved your entire face--sides, neck, chin, etc. Don't try to get the perfect shave at first, just a decent shave. As you get better over time at stropping, blade angle, and shaving wtg, xtg and atg you'll find that you achieve closer shaves and come closer to that desired bbs shave that we all aim for.

    Again, welcome aboard.

BTW...the definitions for all of the acronyms I have used in this message can be found at the SRP wiki.

    Default New here

Hello, my name is Mark. I'm realtively new to the striaght razor. I started shaving with a straight a few weeks ago. I bought a pre-sharpened 5/8 Dovo Black Star from Classic Shaving.com. Actually I bought a whole kit with the strop, soap, mug, and silvertip badger brush. I have really enjoyed the experience so far and actually look forward to shaving everyday when it used to be such a chore! 2010 is a year for many changes in my life, and I am very happy to add this one to the list. Glad to be here guys (and girls)!

    Default Obligatory New Guy Post

    Hello all,

My name is Blake and I've been thinking about starting to straight razor shave for a while now. Today I figured I'd stop lurking, browse the classifieds, and give it a go. I currently work in Car Audio but I've just graduated with an Anthropology degree and I'm looking for something in the non-profit sector before eventually going to grad school.

My profile has more about me and my hobbies

I joined awhile back, then became distracted and have since returned.

I'm Bob, and I've been fascinated with straight razor shaving for a long, long time, but only recently started doing the reading and research.

At present, I'm looking for one of those nice-but-reasonably-priced Polish razors I see mentioned around here. I bought one via e-bay awhile back, but want a second one, per many of the suggestions I've read.

A strop is on its way in the mail, as are a couple of nice soap cakes. Looking forward to getting started in earnest this time.
