Default Matt M, new to forum

    Hey,

I've been using straights off and on for a little over 20 years and recently got back into it. I've been pulling together a magazine piece to query on the industry with numbers for manufacturing and popularity. I will be sending out a query in the next day or two, still deciding between a couple national magazines to try.

In addition to a few straights, I have a Merkur Heavy Duty Contemporary double edge, but I'm not very good with it yet. I want to show my son, 17, how to use it.

    Advice?

    Matt M

One day I just happened to stumble into an Art of Shaving store near my home and thought it was the coolest thing. When I came out I dove headfirst onto the net getting more info and found SRP. Now I'm waiting for Lynn to return my shave-ready razor. Thanks for everyone's help.

    Default Here goes...

Hi everyone, I'm a 50 year old veterinarian in Alabama. For most of my life I used electric razors because every safety razor I tried irritated my skin. A few years ago I tried using soap & a cheap brush with a Gillette Fusion 5 blade and had no irritation. Because of my American Indian heritage I have sparse, odd facial hair growth. You'd think that I would easily get a close shave because of the low # of facial hairs per square inch, but I don't. This week I decided to replace the cheap brush with a good badger brush (tired of bristles coming out and hanging off my face & razor). I placed an order for a shaving set including stand, badger brush, bowl, and handle for the 5 blade from shavemac. Then last night I watched several straight razor videos and read Lynn Adam's beginner info about using a straight razor. After a flurry of emails to Bernd Blos I made last minute additions to the order - a DOVO 5/8 straight razor to match the set and a strop. They're due to arrive next week. I understand that the learning curve is steep, but I'm excited about the prospects of a closer shave. I also have to admit that there is a nostalgic appeal about a return to "simpler" times. Just wish I had the old mug grandpa used with his shaving soap...

Thumbs up Glad to be here!

Hello everyone, I am happy with this site, alot of help from experienced people, and everyone is very nice. Thanks!
I am a thirty one year-old from Kansas. I am into Traditional Chinese Martial arts, Native American Culture, Cooking, Gardening, Woodworking, I have too many hobbies, and I must be weird because I like chopping wood for fun in my free time.
I have always wanted to learn how to shave with, and maintain a straight razor. Mainly I like doing things the old-fashioned way. It seems... just better, because with each new invention we seem to be more dependant on society. Also it is just so much more fun, and really cool. I rationalized the spending of 400 dollars on gear to my girlfriend, that "it is a big up front cost, but will save me thousands of dollars in the long run!" However I think I may be where I won't have to purchase any more equipment, I hope! I have been honing knives since I was a kid, but am super-aggrivated with all my fancy hones. I haven't been able to put a good edge on anything. I guess I have to take it easy and not get perturbed, as with everything if i want to learn it right it will take time.

    Hello,
I'm new this site, and glad to be here. I have always been a wet shaver - started with a DE and switched to a Rolls in the early '70's. The Rolls blade I've been using finally wore completely out a coupla weeks ago. Luckily I have another which is pretty much new. I have always had a straight, but have only used it infrequently, and mostly for touch ups at that. Now that I've discovered this site I plan to get more serious with my straight and see how it goes. Maybe it'll help extend the life of the new Rolls blade. Thanks in advance for your help

Default Newbie needs help identifying first razor

After having my first hot lather straight razor shave last week in Chelsea at Uriel's I'm hooked. Even though he used one of the faux razors with the disposable blade the experience and quality of the shave was an epiphany.

Today, just by chance, I purchased a straight razor in a NY flea market in the hope that it is acceptable to learn on. I'm trying to date it and get an idea of it's history. Can anyone help out? Is this an acceptable style/shape for personal use?

    The details:

    entire razor folded - 6 1/4"
    entire razor open - 9 3/4"
    entire blade - 5 1/2"
    ground/edged area - 2 3/4"
    height of blade - 5/8"
Scales - black Bakelite or plastic...not sure

    printing on blade side 2:
    George Wostenholm & Son
    Washington Works
    Sheffield - England
    "U" (near hinge point

    Side 1: pipe logo

    Default Hello

Hi everyone my name is Fred and I just got tired of not shaving for a few weeks and having my mach 5 clog up. I also got tired of how expensive the mach 5 blades are (10 dollars or more for a few blades), so I did some research and bought a feather artist club rg razor.

I also bought Trumpers limes shaving cream and a badger brush from someone in Hong Kong which I am hoping is acceptable quality.

I have just done my first shave with the feather pro guard blades and only cut myself very minimally.

I would like to buy a cheap used non disposable straight razor but I am scared of not being able to strop and hone it right.

I am glad to be here at this forum and nice to meet you all in advance.
