Really? I thought it would be easier to shave with a straight razor if your beard was longer because the hair wouldn't get caught up in the blades openings like they would in regular mach 5 saftey razor.

I guess I assumed wrong?

Welcome sanchin22; If you have a sharp razor there is no reason for it to hurt other than incorrect angle while using. Have you read the beginners section of the WIKI HERE? Do you have a strop?

entire razor folded - 6 1/4"
entire razor open - 9 3/4"
entire blade - 5 1/2"
ground/edged area - 2 3/4"
height of blade - 5/8"
Scales - black Bakelite or plastic...not sure

Thank you for the welcome Paco.

I opted to go with a feather disposable straight razor right away because I was apprehensive about spending honing and stropping and spending all the money for the other equipment.

Feather "Artist Club" RG Razor

that link is to the razor I have.

I shaved with not much on my face when I first got my razor and I am now waiting a few days longer(probably a week) to shave to see how it goes that way.

After looking at the price of the feather plus blades you can get started with a real straight, strop, brush and soap for about the same cost.
Classifieds can get you a razor shave ready for $25-50, check vendors and classifieds also for strops, Tweezerman badger brushes are about $13 and very good, also soaps can be had from drug store"Williams or VDH"
Just a thought.

Superspot-I will keep you posted and let you know how it goes with shaving off longer length hair.

Paco- I thought about getting a traditional but I didn't know if I would like it at first so I heard good reviews about the feather and thought I would try it. Plus I didnt really know if I would mess up the razor if i had to strop and hone it myself.

I will continue to shave with this feather and as I get more comfortable maybe get myself a good starter razor from the classifieds as you pointed out with all the equipment to match. Thanks for the advice.
