Thanked: 2WORD FROM THE CHI!
Hi people! This looks to be where I should introduce myself, so here goes:
I'm Matt, pretty new to straight razor shaving. I bought an old razor at an antique store a few months ago, and had an old school barber I know sharpen it for me, and I've been keeping that edge in shape on the back of my belt in between sharpenings. Now, I had the barber sharpen my razor 3 times in 3 months, and he's getting a little irritated, so now I have to venture out on my own Luckily, I discovered SRP a little bit ago, and finally pulled the trigger, so here I am on a new hobby adventure!

Elmhurst, another suburb.. first things first for your sharpening issues and what not.
1) if you need a shave sooner than later.. pick up a sharpening hone and watch some youtube videos.. or theres a guy in Addison that does servicing. The Restored Razor
2) Scrap using the belt.. get a strop.. it should keep your edge longer (unless your using a razor that might not be great quality)
3) I'm also relatively new to straights.. i got some insight.. but my word is no where near the intellect others on here might have to offer.
Just trying to help

Thanked: 993Welcome to SRP!
There's a whack load of great info here. Check out the classifieds section of the site for strops, barber hones and such. Sounds like you're ready to jump in with both feet.
Keep us posted on how your adventure unfolds.

Thanked: 2hey guys, thanks for all the great advice! Yes I definitely have got the itch...and let me rephrase, for quite a while I was using my belt, but bought a crappy strop last week. I wish I wish I knew better then, I would have got a better strop..but hey, live and learn. Gotta spend some money in this hobby anyways...hell I'm so itchy with this thing, I'm jumping head first...starting to collect old razors...expecting a hone in the mail...man, I don't know what I got myself into...
Isn't it crazy how these things are so addictive? I wouldn't have believed it if i didn't see it happening to me right now...
