    Default Hello from Montreal

Hi all. I decided last year that I was done with tossing used Gilette blades all the time, so I started shopping for a straight. I ended up with something similar to a Shavette, which reduced the plastic landfill, but not the actual blade waste.

I think that I may have developed some bad habits from teaching myself to shave with that faux straight razor. Fortunately, a friend who knew I was straight shaving told me about this site, so here I am.

I also recently ordered an affordable Dovo Astrale, which has not yet arrived. Er, but since landing on this site, I have developed a certain yen for many, many different razors, none of which clock in at the same price point as the Dovo. Like, none.

Anyway, hello. Nice to meet you all.

Welcome to SRP Jes. You've done well with a Dovo, they are typically great razors.

Have. Look at the beginners section of the wiki. There is some good stuff there on blade angle etc. Also a couple of vids there.

Anyway, any specific questions just fire away. There are plenty of knowledgeable guys here to answer your questions.

Were did you buy the Astrale from ? Do you know if it's shave ready ? Do you have a strop ?

    What about lathering ? Do you use a brush & soap/cream ?

    Hi Jes, welcome to SRP!!!

There's a couple of nice places here If your looking for gears in Montreal but it's more expensive than if you order online.

    cheers

    Thanks guys.

I bought everything online, because I didn't know that there were many places here in Montreal to get equipped (thanks for the heads-up, Doom. I'll likely be asking you where those places are at some point).

The razor came from classic shaving [dot] com, and yes, I bought a strop as well. I got the Filly from RupRazor because I figured I'll probably destroy my first strop.

I don't know if I got the best price by going to Classic Shaving for the razor. I'm thinking that it would have been better to have found the forum before spending my money, but you know...

EDIT: By the by, Str8Raz0r, love that avatar. What beast is that?

Also, while I've been using my scrappy Dannyco with the replaceable blades (it uses half a safety-razor blade. I *think* the Shavette does the same thing. Am I right about that?), I've been using a shave soap that comes in a wooden bowl from Crabtree & Evelyn. *Since* joining SRP, I've ordered a soap from Mamma Bear, and can see myself trying out several before deciding whether or not the C&E soap's going to remain my shave soap of choice.

I also see that my pre-shave pre has been uh... less than perfect, which explains the occasional razor-burn. Once everything arrives (uh, about that Canada Post lockout...), I'm looking forward to getting the technique down.

    Jes,

if you want a really good pre/post shave, try proraso pre/post. The stuff is amazing, no razor burn, no ingrown hairs, loooooove that stuff. You can find some Proraso at Pharmacie Jean-Coutu in the razor dep. or in the beauty section.

    cheers

    You did good for price.

Did you buy the "Factory Edge" Dovo Astrale ? or the "Professionally honed" Dovo Astrale ? If you bought the "Professionally honed" razor, you'll just need to wipe the oil off the blade & start shaving. If you bought the "Factory Edge", I suggest you send the razor out to get honed.

Okay, there's a Jean Coutu pretty near where I am, so I'll go check it out next week.

I spent the extra on the professionally sharpened one. I figured it would be the easiest way to go.
