Default Hello everyone new guy from MA, US

    Hello,

I am new to straight razors and just got started by picking up an old razor I hope to restore.
I am really bad with a camera but I will try to put up some pictures. This is my first straight razor so I hope to learn with it as I go along.

    Name: Family pics 001.jpg
Views: 470
Size: 17.7 KB

On the blade it reads:" Day & Night Tobacco"
On the tang a trade mark of "Worcester Razor Co" and a heart and under it Worcester, Mass

It is really stained but I hope to be able to clean it up or possibly find someone in the area who can Hone it, as it is right now it could use some sharpening. I hope to find more info on what exactly "Day & Night Tobacco " is? Any info/leads would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for reading my thread and I look forward to meeting some new people.

    Welcome to SRP.

Nice looking razor. For honing in your area, check the classifieds section. Another option is to see if there is a mentor in your area, or a long standing member who may be able to help. I think that if you sent out a few PM's here and there, you'd find that the community at large is pretty receptive.

Good luck. I'm up in Canada, but let me know if I can be any help.

Worcester Razor made many different blades, some strictly commercial and others fairly fancy. I've got a regular shaver that's a Worcester marked, American Extra Hollow Ground. Nice steel and shaves easily. You did well!

If you're ever up in the Berkshires check out Sal's barber shop in Great Barrington. They're an authorized reseller for art of shaving and they also have a guy who does straight shaves.
I was up there to visit my family last week and my dad was pretty interested in watching me when I shaved. Granted, it was hot as a fudgenutter, especially Friday when we took the kids to Forest Park zoo so I shaved in the laked to be comfy as my folks have no AC.
Anyhoo, my dad called tonight to say he had stopped by Sal's for a straight shave on his way home from work and was enjoying the feeling so far.
Also, should you stumble across a J.R. Torrey razor, also from Worcester, they are awesome shavers.

Yup, both Brockton and Worcester were active hotbeds for straight razor manufacture. I was surprised, and pleased.

From Albany to Boston it seems that there were quite a number of reputable razor makers. I grew up in the podunk little town of Otis and if I could afford to move back I'd probably do so in a heartbeat. In the interim I've contented myself to hunt for razors from the area

Welcome! If all else fails, you can mail it off to a professional for honing. Usually runs $13-$20.
