Thanked: 983Chinese 12000 grit or C12k for short. For just a quick refresh of the edge it will do the job. There are better choices out there, but for the budget concious you won't go too far wrong. A 4k/8k combo would be my next purchase after that. Don't forget to lap the stones flat before you use them. That would do you for a good while I'd think. Unless you acquire the dreaded HAD...

2 questions there. For touchup just watch the varied list that will follow this post.
For restoring edges & on a budget go Norton, Naniwa SS even Kings can do the job. More cash to spend ? Shapton or Naniwa Chosera.
There are other stones that can work in the right or even the wrong hands but I think these are the mostl used ones by razorists on SRP.
Naturals deliberately omitted for simplicity & consistency. The white gleam of swords, not the black ink of books, clears doubts and uncertainties and bleak outlooks.

Just after finishing for now. I was just gonna use the French blades to practice technique before I needed to do it for real on a razor I'm using

Welcome to SRP Luke. Good to see more Aussies going straight. I'm in Brisbane as well, let me know if you need anything.
Enjoy!

Aftrer going through many different stones, I have settled on the king 1000 for bevel setting, 4000 shapton and 8000 shapton.. Because they are consistant.. I don't need any magic to hone a razor. For finishing touches I prefer a coticle. That does require a little magic, but once you get it, it leaves a buttery edge..

Thanked: 485Love the scales on that razor. I use a Shapton 16k for touch ups. That and a Norton 4/8 is all I've ever used (and 1k wet and dry wrapped around the Norton ) But like onimaru said, you're going to get a long list.
Stranger, if you passing meet me and desire to speak to me, why should you not speak to me? And why should I not speak to you?

So it looks like the common idea is that 8K isn't quite fine enough to finish on, even for a beginner... I should be looking at 12k or 16k synthetics. Obviously like anything brand is personal choice.

At this stage, Luke, drop around to my place and you can try some of the hones I have so that you can get the idea of how they work without having to spend anything.
The 8K is OK to finish on IMHO
I've got a Norton 4/8, coticle, PHIG, Thuringian, Welsh Slate set etc.
Hope this helps.
GeoffHang on and enjoy the ride...

Hi Luke, take up Geoff's offer to show you his hones. I visited him a few days ago and learned heaps. Like you, I am starting out on the slippery road of honing. HAD for short, ha ha
Have a good one mate.

That's not true. You could shave off an 8k honed by an experienced guy & it would be better than an edge off 12k or 16k from a newb honer & I mean heaps better.
Of course an experienced guy could improve the 8k edge further but you get my drift ? It's partially about the stones but the hands are VIP.The white gleam of swords, not the black ink of books, clears doubts and uncertainties and bleak outlooks.
