    Default Hello from Narangba Queensland

    Hello All,
My name is Brenden and I am 26 years old and live just north of Brisbane
and have recently started looking into the scarey world of straight edge razors and DE's(more the Straights tho) and all that goes with it.

So far I have put the feelers out amongst family and friends to see if anybody has some equipment(razors/brushes/strops) kicking around in the back of their cupboards as I am more keen on getting an old blade that can be restored with some history in it than a brand new blade. plus its a whole lot cheaper!

My wife thinks I am crazy as I don't tend to shave as I usually get a lot of irritation/ingrown hairs with my trusty ol Mach 3 when I use it so usually just use a set of hair clippers with no comb attached

Hope to learn a whole lot and enjoy the ride ASAP

    Thanks
    Brenden

Welcome to SRP, my story was very similar, could shave with teh grain of my beard but would easily get razor burn or ingrown hairs. I was going to go DE but jumped to Straight Razor and so happy! What are your questions? Feel free to look up if there are any SRP members in your area you can messege, look them up here.

This will help you out a lot, I did the same thing, got an old antique store razor in decent condition and met with a mentor to restore it and get it honed. Good luck and ask all the questions you can think of! Otherwise search, if you think of it then so has someone else usually.

    Welcome to SRP!

I'm in your area, as are a couple of other guys. If it ever gets to the point where you'd like to meet up to discuss stuff just send any of us a PM.

    Welcome to the "Place"
You may find it's not a whole lot cheaper if you start collecting "stuff"

    Thanks for the welcome everybody
I can definitely see it can get VERY expensive when you start collecting stuff thats for sure! but then a mans gotta do what a mans gotta do!

and so far most of my questions are being answered by the various FAQ's on here and other boards and youtube

Minnebrew that certainly is a relief that the straight edge shaving got rid of a fair amount of your problems which sound the same as mine

Jimbo will be good to meet up at some stage once I have my equipment as I am sure a bit of one on one tutoring on how to strop and hone wouldn't go astray!

how does the Whipped Dog poor or rich mans strop kits rate overall?? as I was looking to go down that path if I can't uncover anything from my friends and family?

    Cheers
    Brenden

The key to a less irritated shave is great shave prep, sharp edge, no pressure, don't force the shave, and post shave treatment. There is no answer for all these but whatever works for you.

    Brendan,
Welcome to SRP from another QLD'er.
+1 on the Whipped Dog deals. Keep in touch with local guys for advice before parting with those hard earned AUS$'s.

    thanks for the welcome
My wife is from T'ville. we will be up there in June for her Grandma's 90th birthday
it is a nice place to visit, not sure if I could live there tho

Are there any people in QLD or Australia that could offer a similar deal to what Larry does on Whipped dog? as the biggest investments appear to be the razor and the strop and then a hone once you need one which appear to be relatively cheap??

    Hi Brenden,

great to see another Aussie (and QLDlander) jumping into the straight scene; you've certainly come to the right place! You'll get all the good oil here on how to shave with a straight and maintain an edge.

We have meet-ups in the Brisbane area every 6 months or so and I know all the regulars would be keen to share their collective knowledge. Hope to see you at the next one.

With regard to your question about a good deal on a razor and strop, you may well be better off with an order from the US as we tend to pay a premium in Australia for new straights and strops - not to knock the local dealers though, as they've got to make a living and they all give very good service. I started by learning how to hone ebay and flea market specials but I definitely wouldn't recommend that path. Get yourself a good shave ready vintage 5/8 or 6/8 razor and a budget strop - plus some good shave soap or cream and a brush :-)

Welcome aboard and hope to see you at our next meet.

    Mike
