Here is a GREAT tip I came across after doing multiple scales. Cut some sandpaper in long thin strips:

Use this between your thumb and the scale and pull with your other hand. This makes sanding go MUCH
faster to get into shape:

BE CAREFUL YOU DON’T GO TOO FAR!!!!

Press with your left thumb in this case and pull with the right hand. You can adjust pretty quickly to exactly where you need to sand down.
