Thread: Bowl, scuttle or mug?

That's pretty much what I used to do.
I bought a noodle bowl (deep) and a soup bowl (shallow) both had very similar lip diameters so the shallow bowl sat nicely in the deep bowl with only a few mm protruding, filled deep bowl with water, put shallow bowl inside and made lather, you can put your brush into the lower bowl to soak, the upper bowl acts like a lid.Bread and water can so easily become tea and toast

I'd go with SRD lather bowl. It has those grooves in the bottom to help build lather, and although they aren't necessary, they do help. If you want warm lather, soak your lather bowl in hot water and use hot water to make your lather etc. I've heard some guys say that their lather breaks down when they use a scuttle with too much heat.
I look at it this way...a lather bowl is a tool, a scuttle is a luxury.
The rest is up to you.

Here's a selection of bowls I either have or do use:
The large cup works ok, the take away tub is ok, but I don't like the cheapness of it, the mini csserole dish is good I keep Palmolive soap in the bottom, and uberlather it, the leftover lather goes in on the top, the black plastic soap dish worked when I was on holiday, it has 4 sticky out bits to hold the soap which (without a puck of soap in the way) helped to build lather but it is a bit on the small side, the white mug is too deep and narrow, the brown bowl is good as the sides slope inwards and there is space to work.
I think my ideal bowl would be 4-5" across, 2-2.5" deep, with sloping sides, some.sort of texture inside - I saw one that had raised bumps which looked nice, would be able to be held from below, so either I have an idea of what I want but it's too hard to explain, blue fading through green glaze (or red)Bread and water can so easily become tea and toast

You might want to look at these scuttles Robert's Feats of Clay - Shaving Scuttles. You might be surprised at how close you are on the dimensions for youe ideal bowl.

Yes, they are about right aren't they, I don't use a scuttle though, just a bowl, I like being able to cradle the bowl in my non brush hand when I mix up my lather, obviously that isn't possible with all of the various things I use. I think I might go back to the second hand shops ne t time I am in Perth and see what I can find.

Thanked: 3225Sorry, I did not mean you should use one, although the Robert Becker I have is nice. Just that you and he seem in agreement on what the ideal dimensions are. I agree with you both, when I was using scuttles and bowls to lather that is the same conclusion I came to by experimenting.
