Thrift Store Find = Scuttle?
So, I found this yesterday at a thrift store, I was just browsing and I always keep my eye out for a scuttle, because I've been wanting one for a while now. Well, here is what I picked up yesterday:
I plan to try to paint it, but don't have any experience doing that, so I'm trying to look up how / if I can do that. I checked and it holds 2 full cups of water. Its a different design than I have ever seen, it says Lillian Vernon on the bottom. Any thoughts on what it was originally for? I don't believe it was originally a shaving scuttle, but thats what I plan to use it as!State v. You, Sir, have an oven proof casserole. Lillian Vernon is a brand name of a merchandiser that sells via catalogs received in the mail (often un asked for).) You do not want to paint the interior. I would think any decent enamel based spray paint would work, check with the paint person in your local hardware store. I'm a great re-user of objects. I haunt my local Goodwill looking for items I can use for lather building. I also like to add texture to the interior like you see in commercial lather bowls/scuttles. I get an epoxy that will mix as you apply it and add dots or swirls on the bottom and vertical ridges on the interior side. Caution, sets up in a minute, hard to remove and must use sparingly or it just spreads out. Let dry 24 hrs and you are good to go.

If it works, you got a bargain. I can't wait to hear about your results with it.
It took me three guesses to figure it out. Onion soup. It might make a very nice scuttle, not that it was intended to hold hot water; it is made to insulate soup so the cheese doesn't go all chewy for a few minutes.

Yeah, I saw that too, but I'm not convinced. It has the shape of an onion soup bowl, but those don't have chambers like this (it's designed to hold hot water) and they normally have lids, this doesn't. That person on etsy has the same thing I do, but I'm not sure they really know what it is either.

By paint it do you mean paint the outside?
I would do exactly nothing to that. It looks great, and I would use it as it is. MHO.
