I should be back in the studio this week. I will throw a new one with the improvements I've already talked about. I have started to use the scuttle a bit differently than the last one and it has made a bit of difference. I really liked how I could nuke the old one and get back to it after my shower and still have hot lather. A scuttle with the best of both is my goal.

If I can get something thrown on Thursday, I should be able to shave with it by next Tuesday.

    How different?

I like both scuttles so far. In any case, look forward to the next one Jerry!

    Default Scuttle 2.0

    Hello, Jerry,

That scuttle is good work. It not only is pleasing to the eye, but it also appears to guarantee good results in keeping the lather warm. Congratulations.

    Regards,

    Obie

    Hi Jerry,

I like the basic design of the scuttle, but would make a few recommendations. I currently own most of the ones in production by people and have a pretty good feeling about what makes them good.

On yours, I would open up the spout a little bigger if possible. I would also use a little thicker clay as I am finding that the thicker helps hold the heat a little better. You also want to make sure there is room for water than less between the walls of the two bowls especially under the bottom of the top bowl that holds your brush. If you can do this, you will find that with just a little layer of hot water in the top bowl, that your brush will stay hot through an entire shave.

    Very nice work.

    Thanks,

    Lynn

Does that mean more water under the bowl and less around the sides?

I definitely agree about enlarging the spout. I have a Georgetown Pottery G-5 and like the lip to keep the lather in the bowl; it also allows me to squeegee the lather from the top of the brush and reload it into the tip of the brush. I do like your handle better. The G-5's handle doesn't give you something to stabilize it when carrying it. I would suggest a flat thumb platform on the top of the handle to brace with your thumb and maybe a notch on the lower handle to brace with your middle finger when carrying/holding.

Or maybe a "horn" on the top of the handle that you could hook your thumb on to prevent the whole scuttle from sliding/rotating/tipping over when picked up with wet or lathery fingers.

thats cool and if i had a wheel i would get back into the fun i already ahve a kiln and few years exp.

have you even thought of makign it one piece then ad the handle and spout

not sure if you had even done any double wall stuff or even if you had any practice closing the top of a pot and then shaping it like a bubble on the wheel (kind of hard to explane )

More water both under the bowl and around the sides. Also don't make the bowl too big unless you intend making your lather in the bowl itself.
