Creamed chipped beef on toast. I grew up on it, and my wife and I lived on it, as well as macaroni and cheese, as poor college students in the early 70's. I probably haven't had it in over thirty years, and I think I'll ask her to make it again, for old time's sake.

Hamburger BUT chipped beef the way you explain it sounds much better. Next time it will be your recipe.

My stepfather (retired AF) made creamed chipped beef on toast. That's all I knew till going into the military.
NAS Whidby Island, WA mid-rats had the best hamburger SOS I ever tasted in the chow halls.

I haven't had SOS in years, maybe I'll have to make a batch. All I ever had that was called SOS had chipped beef in the sauce along with onions and some spices, nuthin fancy but not bad.
It is a 'formed' product in that the meat and 'other things' are ground, then pressed processed and then sliced.
By the way:

I found that much of the 'Crap' that I ate in 'Some of' the 'Military Facilities' actually tasted rather good when fixed by knowledgeable 'Civilian Cooks' like my grandmother or mother and later myself and others. (Chipped Beef on Toast) 'Civilian for SOS'.
I will say this: Eating on board a submarine was completely different from eating on Any Shore Facility. Not only was the quality of the food much, much better but so was the 'choices'. Bet you never got to order how you wanted your eggs cooked for your breakfast or if your steak was to be done rare/medium rare/well done etc for your supper.
