Of course I could drive to Ontario to get booze, Wine/hard stuff is usually cheaper but their beer tends to be more expensive. Or drive to the States to go through duty free. But otherwise there is basically 1 game in town.
Well sort of there are ways around the SAQ. You can become a member of a society/club or whatever they call them that imports wine/spirits giving you access to stuff not normally sold through the SAQ, but they have to import them to the SAQ and you pick them up there. Govt wants ot make sure they get their cut.
Yes I am a member of one of these, called the Opimian society, yearly fees and I beleive 10 offerring a year where they feature different reagions to choose from each time.
IMHO its worth it but then I like my wine and scotch

It's Tin Cup American Whiskey in the glass tonight. An interesting whiskey-distilled in the Midwest and cut with water with water in Colorado reminds me of bourbon.

I've picked up a bottle of Yamasaki distillers reserve (I think - it's an NAS bottle anyway). Half think I should have got miyagikyo instead but never mind. The Yamazaki should be good.

I've heard good things about that, but only had the 12 year old myself. I'm exploring glen glassaugh new make spirit again this evening.

I was about to purchase a couple of bottles of Nikka whisky from the duty free shop at Narita Airport on Saturday evening and one of the sales persons warned me that it would be confiscated at Doha when I went through customs to catch my connecting flight, which turned out to be 100% true.

Wow, that's pretty intense that they won't even let you through to a connecting flight with it. I guess having it in a sealed plastic bag doesn't help if they're that strict.

Edit: I just googled the alcohol laws for Qatar. They're STRICT!

It was a bit of a bummer but their duty free shop on the other side of customs had plenty of alcohol, so in my opinion, their rules make absolutely no sense.
