Scotch/whiskey of the day

Wow, you guys are really pouring out the grains with the cold here and the holidays around the corner! I'm a huge fan of Lagavulin 16, the Macallan 12, Highland Park, and some of the other mentions here-love 'em all. That Lagavulin 8 is definitely on my to-do list!

I've been out Christmas shopping and going broke spending for family, not to mention $2k on house taxes and new tires. So Merry Christmas to me!

This one is best with dark chocolate and a chip of ice (to release the sweetness) on a cold evening. QC is one of my favorite Islays: bold and briny, peaty and medicinal, but with a delicious sweetness with a little water or an ice chip-at 48%, it's a bit harsh for me otherwise.

My college buddy and I were throwing out the idea of a japanese whiskey swap for Christmas. I know these were discussed a few pages back but what recommendations would the more seasoned Japanese whiskey drinkers give for an all around good value bottle in the $50-70 range? He and I have both traded single malts in the past and I believe he's a fan of the Islay smokey/briny flavors of brands like Laphroaig 10yr. But it would be our first foray into Japan so any opinions are welcome!

The Laddie is on my last, and I haven't even tried any of the Japanese malts yet, though I hear they are excellent. The Japanese have a way of taking the products of other cultures and improving on them. I hope to tour there some day.

More notes on this please. I've only recently started on what bruichladdich distillery offer; I have a bottle of port charlotte Scottish barley, I've tried the islay barley version, an octomore 7.1 and the classic laddie. All are very good and very distinctive.
The laddie 10 is on my list but how does it differ from the classic laddie?

That's what's so good about it! The finish is huge. You can make a dram of this last for hours.

But, just like everything, to each their own. It's what makes the world go round!

I love the Quarter Cask. It's been in my cup quite a bit these days.

That's why I like it!:beer2: But one is definitely enough! If I'm feeling wild, I might follow it up with a blend or a beer, but even I don't need much!

But yeah, it's definitely not for everybody-maybe it's the Lilac Vegetal of scotches, lol.:rofl2: Just curious, Outback, what are some of your faves? Flavor profiles you lean towards? I'm still learning a lot about the wonderful world of malt whisky.

I'm quite partial to bourbons.
Elijah Craig, knob creek, makers Mark, Wild Turkey, and Ezra Brooks, old Ezra. I like it bold, and full flavored, and straight up. No ice, no water, just that nice chard, caramel, woody flavor, that bourbon has.
Though I did enjoy a whole bottle of 30 yr.old Vat 69, scotch whiskey. Man was that tasty, and o so smooth.

You might want to try something lighter then ;) My recommendation: 12 year old Bowmore. That stuff was my introduction into the world of Single Malts about 30 years ago, when a father of a friend of mine poured me a glass. You can still smell and taste the peat smoke, but it is not overwhelming - it just adds to the overall character. A mild and well-rounded whisky in my opinion.
