Mike, some very good recommendations. I am a huge Islay fan myself and have reached the point where I am glad to try anything else, however I will only buy bottles of Islay whisky myself. Now that said, within the genre I do have a number that I drink from time to time. Tonight I will be uncorking a Octomore that I got in last week.
AHH!!! Octomore! My one regret about The Wagon is that when I jumped on it, the Octomore had only begun aging, and I sadly never was able to try it...for you Islay fans: the smokey component in our beloved aqua vitae comes from phenols. To put the peatyness of Octomore into some kind of relative scale, Ardbeg phenol ppm: ~20, Laphroaig 10 phenol ppm: ~30...Octomore phenol ppm: ~85.
Enjoy it in good health Sir!
Thanks Mike, you are very well educated in the spirits obviously, worthy of "mentor" status. I will enjoy it for sure and I will hoist the first glass in tribute of you. It's my first time with Octomore and the suspense is killing me.
As a side note, regret nothing about being on The Wagon. I find it extremely commendable and my hat is off to you Sir! I have reeled my own habit back to about a bottle every two+ months and have been considering that this may very well be my retirement bottle. I am just not sure that I have your discipline to follow it through...
Gerry, if it were a matter of "my drinking is a little out of control" I'd probably still be drinking. After 48 years of pretty hard living I'd been having some health problems, internal stuff...went to the see my doctor (whom I consider a trusted friend) and he basically said "You have pancreatitis, your liver is failing; Your next drink could literally kill you". Instant perspective! So my motivation was pretty solid.
I don't recommend this method of coming to abstinence however :P.

Eagle Rare Bourbon tonight, gents. 10 year old, single barrel. First impression is that it's similar to Buffalo Trace Bourbon but mellower.
My wife suggested I pick out something to share with friends after dinner. Knowing they were not Scotch fans I went with something on my Bourbon short list.
