After the cold water rinse and pat down, I use balms for dry and sensitive skin.

Its good to have a few different choices to choose from. Treat yourself good!

Depends on the Witch Hazel, most have alcohol in them so they will burn. Thayer's makes there toners with no alcohol and their astringents with, also have some other great ingredients. So they cost more then plain witch hazel but good stuff.

Does anybody use witch hazel first and then use an aftershave w/alcohol afterwards? Is that an ok combo? I heard that WH basically closes pores so there is less burn, or so dirt does not get in them.

Yes, I do. In the seldom case that I need a little extra moisture, I'll layer a balm on top of that.

I have been using Nivea after shave lotion for the last month or so and found I like the way it softens the skin. It's fragrance fades quickly so it doesn't conflict with my colonge or after shave.

Witch hazle is mostly water. Some brand contain a small amount of alcohol as a preservative, others use tocophirol (vitamine E), both of these can burn very sensitive skin (if that is what you have), but should be no problem for normal skin.

I looked and looked yesterday for pure witch hazel..... all were 14% alcohol...... Is this normal?

    bjanzen,

Yes...Regular witch hazel does contain alcohol. However, Thayer's does make an alcohol free version of witch hazel. You can purchase it online at Vintage Blades, Straight Razor Designs or Best Grooming and Tools.
