FWIW, I have switched from witch hazel to an alum block after coming to the realization that the witch hazel was conducive to post shave whiteheads (zits if you will). Alum block leaves my face much tighter. This is followed by Booster's or Clubman depending on my mood. I will reach for the Nivea replenishing balm if I rush the shave and give myself razor burn (like yesterday).

That's pretty close to what I do, You are lucky to have received the Prairie Creations balm. After the Alum, and Witch Hazel, I use various AS Balms, or After shaves. The difference is, Balms moisturize, while Alcohol products, like Clubman, or Booster or any AS dries out your skin. You can buy a less expensive Balm, such as Nivea or Neutrogena, and follow it with an After Shave. I'll do that from time to time. Also, AS Balms can be very soothing if your irritated or have sensitive skin.

Daily dose's of Alcohol on your face will eventually leed to pre mature aging, it'll suck the moisture out of your skin, That's why it's good to use a moisturizer every once in a while....It's good for you skin.

Alum-AS-ASB here everyday. The first two are astringents and then after the AS dries a nice Balm. Which one depends on my skin and the time of year. The Balm heals your skin protects and prevents damage from the environment, keeps your skin younger looking longer. Nothing wrong for us guys wanting to look young longer to. Treat yourself to one of the better balms you wont regret it.

While I was visiting with Lynn, I sampled some Balm that he had on his sink. I thought it was SRD, but I could be mistaken...

    Smile After Shave Balms

I agree...There is no real reason for an aftershave balm...In fact, the best aftershave balm I have ever used isn't a balm at all, its a Shavette alum block. You can get a block from SRD. It soothes and tones your skin. It even deals with those occasional nicks and cuts that we tend to get on the face when we're not careful.

As for aftershaves...I prefer Booster Polar Ice or Proraso Aftershave when I'm just relaxing around the house on weekends. During the week I've found that Pashana Aftershave is nice. It has a masculine, yet not over-powering long lasting scent.

I disagree, is it necessary no, but there seems to be a stigma for men to take care of their skin. Alum Blocks and AS are great and and important part as a antiseptic, astringent and toner, but the balm comes in after as a moisturizer. To keep your skin in great shape preventing wrinkles and keeping your skin smooth and healthy.
Shaving in general is bad for your skin. Straights are the best for your skin and multi blades the worse.
So get offer the macho shit and take care of your skin lol

    Unhappy what about tonics?

I'm very disappointed that none of you even mentioned skin tonics. The two I have both have witchazel, so function as the witchazel stage of the cold wash/alum block (my deoderant!)/witchazel/AS/AB.

Sometimes I just leave it at the skin tonic part. But that's being lazy. The skin tonics are designed to help my skin not have the little bumps (not sycosis) the next day, as well as deal with general irritation. I have sensitive skin. I have also used regular skin moisturizers (yes, on the face) with good results.

    Default Post Shave Treatment Balms

    Gentlemen,

What has worked for me, after the blade is put down, is the following routine:

    Warm rinse
    Cold rinse
    Witch hazel
    Balm
    After shave

What a great way to start the day.

    Regards,

    Obie
