I've used bourbon and also spiced rum as a splash on several occasions. It's actually not as bad as one would think since it's the base of many aftershaves already. I've never had the inclination that I smell like a hobo, once it hits my skin it's usually fairly pleasant smelling. I think it really varies on what you're splashing on yourself.

The DIY bay rums work pretty well for people, so I don't think this is that crazy of an idea.

I bet whiskey would go well with a leather (Spanish or English) aftershave or cologne.
    Very Interesting!!!

must agree with the gentleman from down under, we are definitely very spoiled in the U.S. Personally, a little ClubMan works just fine for me.

I use "Barbershop Bourbon Aftershave"...1 part Clubman, 1 part bourbon. I don't see a point in using the whiskey by its self, but I sure love the smell of the mixture I use every morning. I'm going to make some and put it in fancy old glass bottles to give away as Christmas presents, too. The whiskey scent lasts about as long as the clubman scent does, ymmv.

Hat tip to Chay2k for the idea.

For what whisky costs, I'm not gonna waste it as an AS.

    6 oz. of clubman: $5
    6 oz. of $20 whiskey $4.72.

But yeah, I wouldn't waste fine aged scotch on my face.

I have been experimenting with this idea. My wife likes my current mix, but I want to change it a bit. As long as you are not using straight whiskey, but actually make an AS, you won't smell like a hobo, assuming a shower was taken before the shave.
As stated above: 1) Bay Rum is made with bay leaves and rum. So the idea is not that out there. 2) Don't use the good stuff, just something that smells nice. 3) Most of the recipes that I have seen call for strong alcohols (80+ proof). Whiskey should be fine.

I, for one, don't have any problem with person doing whatever they like to do. I'm a firm believer in that old axiom: my right to swing my arm ends where the tip of the other man's nose begins. That being said, I just couldn't ever get myself to splash any kind of sippin' spirits on my face. Now, drinking it that's another matter. But hey, I know in composition whiskey's not exactly dissimilar to Bay Rum or Clubman. So, live and let live, that's my motto. A warning: on any nice cold Winter morning, while steelhead fishing, protect your after-shave, as it may be drunk and no questions will be asked!

After buying Dominica Bay Rum and falling in love with that, I saw the Whiskey Aftershave at West Coast Shaving, but they were out of stock so I ordered direct from Portland General Store. They even have a Whiskey shaving soap, but I can just add the aftershave to my unscented soaps for that.
