I had the privilege of bringing my father in and took part in his MM degree. He's was 83 at the time, and in full charge of his faculties. He's 86 now.

That's a nice story. My father was in his late 50s, living out of state (he died in '05 in West Virginia) and was in failing health. I think that something's in life we certainly can be too late for. I told him when he asked, I wouldn't even know how I could help him. I told him to contact a member of a local lodge and ask that member to sponsor him. Which, I don't believe he ever did. As an aside, I look forward to bringing my own son into the Craft. I named him Andrew, I think it was time finally for a change.

That's funny...I was volunteering for an event to benefit cancer in Albany, NY, recently and, I was talking to a gentleman that looked to be about 60 years of age. I mentioned the weather being so good for this time of the year and he says to me "I was supposed to go out and do some golfin with my father." So I said to him "really, wow, your dad is still alive!" And he says to me "not only is he alive, but he kicks my but out there." I thought that was great. And good for you and your dad and enjoy your time together Brother.

If you are talking about using the cheap stuff, then, maybe, but the good stuff, never!

It's actually a fallacy that all Bay Rum is made with actual rum, though there are a few brands that do use rum. See Glen's Bay Rum thread for a breakdown....

Whiskey and other spirits are distilled, however, in my opinion, with the vigilance of law enforcement using sobriety check points or if you get pulled over for some other infraction, in my opinion, I don't think using whiskey or any other spirits is a good idea. There are many good after shave products out there you are better off exploring.

I would just hate to see a nice person like you get pulled over and maybe charged for something you did not do.

As stated above: 1) Bay Rum is made with bay leaves and rum. So the idea is not that out there. 2) Don't use the good stuff, just something that smells nice. 3) Most of the recipes that I have seen call for strong alcohols (80+ proof). Whiskey should be fine.

Portland General Store "Whiskey" smells nothing like whiskey to me, but rather tree bark and ocean air. I really like the smell of this aftershave, but the scent is almost too mild and does not linger for very long. Great ingredients which are very healing to the face.
