I, too, have had severe problems with irritation/razor burn. I could show you a picture that would make you cringe that was only about a year ago. I found that Thayer's Witch Hazel toner works wonders. They have several different varieties (lavender, aloe, etc.). Just make sure you get the TONER not the ASTRINGENT, which contains alcohol and may make things worse. I love Thayers.

Trying different blades, angles and pressure all helps. Also perhaps a pre-shave oil?

I am new. Been straight shaving for about a month and prep is huge! Hot towel or shower. I use neivea preshave (energy n condition) n a shea butter and aloe shave soap. Then gravity aftershave. Its awesome. Goodluck

I started with the merkur DE blades they are sharp and comfortable for that "to much pressure" transitional stage

I am also new to straight razor shaving and already had 4 shaves. The first shave i had a lot of razor burns but from the 2nd onwards, nothing.I use to shave with gillette fusion and had to shave twice a week because of burns.never noticed that it was coming from the blade which i tought it was the best. Now with a straight razor i can shave everyday with no burns and a very smooth shaving.I use post cream from The Body Shop and also everyday before going to sleep i use also this product. It contains aloe vera and keeps your face moisturized.

I had the same irritation issues you did with Fusions and other multiblade razors. The logic of several blades running across your face in one stroke is something I never understood. They can't all be cutting whiskers, and if they aren't cutting whiskers they've got to be scraping your face. I also wondered by the look of them if they are all that well made. The trick I used to fight irritation was to use the same Avon Moisture Cream my mother used. Every time I'd drop by to visit Mom had an extra jar to send home with me. I'd use it after shaving, use it again at night if my face was still irritated, and avoid shaving on Saturday. Nothing else worked. Those Fusions are for the birds, and unsuspecting suckers like I was when I didn't think there was an alternative.

A DE razor solved my problem, but I wanted to use straights. It took me a whole lot more than four shaves to master it but I really enjoy the experience and the results. My face and I are on speaking terms again.

Yes my friend, it's true, but today life is too fast and everybody is in a hurry in the morning so to speed up is by using a multiblade razor. But when you get into straight razor shaving you will never go back and you will save time in the morning for shaving.
