Thanked: 375I've had similar results using Jojoba oil, Coconut oil, and Grape seed oil. I was looking for a moisturizer though. I'm a head shaver, so winter does a number on the scalp. Goes on oily/shiny looking then absorbs, seems strange but it controls my oily complexion too and to boot my head is super supple all day. I'm guessing but I would imagine that it would make a fine pre-shave oil. I tried it under my Lather and the lather held up fine. I was never a fan of oil's combined with shaving. Terrible mess in the sink and my DE's are hard to rinse then, a straight razor of course is a different story.

Thanked: 9I am currently using my own mix of 1 part olive oil, 1 part grape seed oil, 1 part jojoba oil and 1 part castor oil.
I use it to control razor bumps and ingrown hair. These oils have all have distinct medicinal properties easily found by searching. For example, olive oil and castor oil are great against MRSA and grape seed oil has these properties: anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant, anti-histamine, anti-aging, anti-allergic, antimicrobial, and adaptogenic activity.
If I don't use the preshave oil even once, then I get razor bumps and ingrown hair, I'm glad I can control that with the oil.
Some folks might get pimples and such from coconut oil, it ranks high in the comedogenic list.

I apply the oil after washing my face and patting dry. I build my lather while the oil 'sets in' and I splash hot water in my face before lathering.
The oil mixture I describe above is not terribly greasy or oily feeling- it's more of a light dry oil. Also only 2-3 drops are needed- it almost fully absorbs in the 1 min it takes to make a nice lather.
I also use 1-2 drops post shave that I rub in my hands and then apply to my face- it's great.......... Making Old Razors Shine N' Shave, Once Again.

I would say the majority of high end soaps and creams use coconut oil, based on my observation. So if your not putting it as a pre shave chances are likely that your applying the stuff on in lather form anyway.
Though every face is different I have a history of acne, and I can say that I never feel products with coconut oil has ever contributed to a break out......... Making Old Razors Shine N' Shave, Once Again.

Thanked: 9I absolute love and recommend coconut oil to everyone, for both consumption and topical applications. It works great to get rid of chicken bumps on the arms and legs and also great for cuts and burns.
I told my daughter to try it as a face cleanser and she didn't rinse it all out and broke out in acne and let me have an ear full.
I looked it up and found it is a 4 of 5 on the Comedogenic Ratings and explained she may be right as to the cause of the break out. Oops.

Homemade Pre Shave Oil?
Wow I never realized that. I'm assuming in the small drop quantities used as a pre or post shave oil it's less likely to clog up your pores and maybe that's why, at least I personally, haven't had adverse affects with it. I guess it falls into the too much of a good thing category.
In any event, if you have the chance try out a recipe I posted above. It's a really nice DYI project and a bat h last for ever. It also makes a nice gift to your non wet shaving buddy's.
That chart was neat- thanks for the resource. Lots of good info to consider when making home made stuff your about to slather all over yourself!!!Last edited by JoeLowett; 12-22-2013 at 06:04 AM.

Thanked: 2Thanks Joe. I've recently purchased all of the recommended oils except I am going to substitute tea tree oil for mineral oil. I will let you know how it goes.
