Thread: Homemade Pre Shave Oil?

Since this is first post, I want to say hello to everyone and am glad to find this great forum. I was wondering if anyone has a good homemade recipe for pre shave oil? I use AOS oil, but it sure is exspensive. Since I have ordered some good soaps, I may try it both ways. With or without. I have heard about using olive oil and gyclerin.

I've used olive oil with some lime oil added just for fragrance. Musco makes a pre shave glycerin soap for use as a pre shave application. I generally use that and wash my beard area just before I lather. Seems to work decently. Generally tho, I use a uber lather that has glycerin drops in in that replaces pre shave treatments most of the time. Winter is a problem because every thing dries out too fast but I find that a wash with the Musco followed by some olive oil seems to slick things up a bit. Warm weather don't seem to need as much of pre shave. Hope this helps.

Have never understood all the talk about Pre-shave oil.why use it? what do it do?

For pre shave I have used conditioner (leave it on a few minutes), and also I made a 50/50 mixture of glycerin and grapeseed oil. This works real fine and does not have a scent so doesn't interfere with the soap's aroma.

I make my own preshave oil- and I can can say with confidence that all who have used it can swear by it. The trick it to stay away from oily oils- I'm not saying what posted above isn't good but honestly rubbing olive oil on your face is kind of like pouring grease on your face and it kills your lather. By using nourishing oils it actually does something this is what I do...


Warm a bowl in hot water keeping the inside of the bowl dry.

In to the bowl ads 3 tblspoons coconut oil, 1 tbl spoon lanolin and 1 tblspoon mineral oil

U can add a couple drops of EO
I use 1 drop of peppermint and a2 drops of lavender. I also add 1 vitamin E tab if in hand.

Mix together in the hot bowl until combines.

It makes your skin "plump" ready to shave, helps prevent cuts and just works incredible

This is better then any store bought stuff I ever used

And your face doesn't feel like a piece of fried chicken after using it

I wash my face thoroughly with hot water, pat dry and vigorously rub a couple drops of my home made magic oil and the oil and lanolin 100% absorb in to your skin (while I'm building my later) in about 2 mins your cheeks, chin and upper lip are tingly and supple. The skin turns so supple from this oil that it is more difficult to nic. I don't find that any oil softens the beard too much like other claim, but the defiantly prepare your skin beneath the hair to be shaven.

Anyway I swear by it.

I have used eucalyptus and peppermint oils in the mix, and the work nicely as an antiseptic with mild anesthetic properties, the mineral oil really just keeps the lanolin and coconut oil in a more liquid form as both are near solid at room temp.

Lets talk about why pre shave oil

In order to get the best, closest shave its important to soften the hair and open your pores. The best way to do this is by washing your face before you shave with soap and hot water. When you wash your face you remove the majority of skin oil in the first few layers of skin. These skin oils are what make your skin supple and protect you skin. The oils give your skin elasticity which protects your skin as a sharp blade passes over it. It the skin has little oil and lack elasticity due to washing your face to soften the hairs it is more susceptible to being cut.

The trick is to wash your face to soften hairs, remove dirt and open pores prior to shaving but to replace the oils that gives your skin added protection. It this mix the ingredients are very similar to natural skin oil and absorb fully. They also make the skin perfectly conditioned and ready to shave.

I'm not saying you need to do any of this to have a superb shave, but it works. I'm a believer. And it a couple bucks for a years supply in not stingy with it.
