I've started using coconut oil after swmbo suggested it for some unusually dry skin after shaving. Since then I put it on about 30 minutes before I start my routine. Strop shower shave. I rinse my face with warm water in the shower before shaving. I really like alcohol based AS... I've had pretty good results with it. Oh yeah it's really cheap per shave

do you put it on in its solid form or warm it up a little?

It comes as a solid but melts at 70°f so it will melt in your hand

I used to use the Proraso pre/post shave, and tried a few oils, for me they did nothing, if anything, just put another barrier up between the edge and the beard. Stop using them long time ago.

On the other hand, if I've had one of those shaves that somehow ends up with a little more irritation, I'll use the Proraso after, and it's a nice, soothing cream. I've also found the Proraso a very nice cream when your skin gets extremely dry, used it for that a few times after wandering inside after being out in -20 degree weather!!

My two cents (before inflation). Somebody on another thread recommended a little Cremo on a wet face before lathering over it. Someone else recommended the same with Kiss My Face. I have tried both. Both work exceedingly fine. I've also washed my face just before lathering with cold water and an olive oil bar soap and had good results. Some will just use straight olive oil as a pre shave. So, in other words, try it, or it, or whatever and if it works add it to your routine. If not, enjoy the hunt.

I used to use Proraso pre/post every shave. For me, it provided a little more 'slickness'. I lathered straight over the top of it. Now I only use it occasionally. I would recommend that beginners use it, as it does help if your lather is a little gluggy...

I use Vito's pre and post often now and use to use Proraso they are basically the same and can be used interchangeably.

Like Carl I think it does add a bit of slickness but overall doesn't add much.

However I recently have been shaving before my shower. I was lathering - stropping-re lathering- shaving. I was getting decent results but after awhile started getting ingrown hairs on my neck.

After getting that cleared up I decided to use the Vito's before lathering and haven't had issues.

I think if your going to for go a lot of other preps like showering, hot towel, washing your face, ect... A pre shave like Proraso can sub in and do that work. If you doings other preps Proraso isn't goings to add much.

I sometimes use the Proraso pre/post. I put it on in the shower and after about 5 minutes I rinse it off. I remember hearing that the point of pre shaves and oils isn't to lube the skin but to fully moisturize, setting up the skin for a more comfortable shave. True or not, I do enjoy it as part of my routine and find my face a little more forgiving afterwords.
