Thanked: 23Sometimes it seems like I can use all the same stuff. Same pre-shave, soap, etc. and even with the same products (and razor) I get different shaves and my face feels different when I'm done. I'm one year new to straight shaving so I can't determine what makes the difference.
Having said that, I like to rinse off the Noxema or rub it in real well because if I leave it on the surface of my skin it seems to gum up on the razor edge. This seems to make it feel like the razor isn't cutting. Then I rinse the blade under hot running water and I have to wipe some of the gunk off the very edge. When that is happening I normally add water to the brush and either mface lather or with the extra water whip some thinner lather. The goal is to dilute any remaining Noxema on my face. So when using Noxema I don't like any left on the surface of my shin when I shave. Did that make sense? Anyway, it's probably different ways to use the same products that result in different results when I shave.

Thanks to all for the answers. It is starting to make some sense. Finally sinking through all the layers of granite and all. I may try it as a shower preshave that way I can rinse it all off properly before shaving. I typically shave right after shower any way. Look forward to trying it.

Noxema Moisturizing is excellent:
- Easy to find
- Affordable
- Works exceptionally wellMy father was an engineer. He used to tell me that sharpening a straight razor is like trying to build a ladder to the moon out of a roll of aluminum foil.

I just recently started using Noxzema as a face cleaner/preshave cleaner a little over 6 weeks ago. I have been using even on days I don't shave. I have noticed that my face is feeling better overall. When I have to stand outside with the icy winds that bite into your bones, my face has not dried out as bad as years past. First time in over 10 years my face has not hurt as bad and the only real "product" change was adding Noxzema to my normal morning shower.
Other people may have different results. I can only share my results and observations.
Shaving does seem to be improved too, after using it for this length of time.Life's wisdoms: Cigars: Never trust air you can't see; sharp objects are never sharp enough; find what you love in life and give it everything you can!!

Thanked: 23I've been using the Noxema Classic Clean cleanser as a pre-shave since about the beginning of this thread. I think it probably helps when I shave without showering first because I haven't washed my face when showering. I also have some Neutrogena pre-shave cleanser but I don't care for it as a pre-shave because it has scrubbing granuals in it. I'm worried if I don't rinse completely they might degrade the razor's edge. Now if I use Castle Forbes pre-shave after the Noxema that really makes for a noticably smoother shave. But if I don't use both I prefer the Noxema, rinse, shave. I don't know anything for sure but it seems a cleaner face makes more of a difference than the Castle Forbes on a non-cleaned face.
SO
Clean with Noxema then shave with Mitchell's wool fat soap is a very nice shave. Add the Castle Forbes pre-shave and it's REALLY nice. Noxema will remain part of the every shave routine. Castle Forbes is when I've been good and deserve a reward.

Thanked: 33I tried the classic one, but I didn't see any difference. It does not work for everyone, I guess.

If you have a Kroger store near you they have a Blue Jar generic Noxzema that is exactly the same but about 3/4 the price. I have been using it for years and use it every time for cleaning the face before shaving. bj

I can feel the difference in my heard after a couple minutes covered with Noxema Classic Clean. Before- normal, brillstley, sharp.
After- rubbery, not sharp and almost soft plastic like. (I guess that would be rubbery)
