Just be careful if you use the warming stuff. Or not, maybe it could replace the Hot Towel treatment...

Well, I went ahead and used Astroglide as a pre-shave oil this morning and got at least as good a shave as I've had in my limited time with straights. I lathered over the Astroglide, and the shave went very nicely. I'm going to forego the obvious humor I could create from all this in deference to the alternative lifestyle community.
In fact, I liked the Astroglide so well, and it seemed to work so well, that I'm going to shave with just Astroglide tomorrow. It seemed to have plenty of lubrication, as one might of course suspect, and, because one can see through it to the whiskers, it might make shaving more effective. I'm a little concerned that it will work really well, because I'm scared my brushes and soaps will start a catfight or something. I'll do a review of the shave tomorrow.

Ace,
Using these gels alone can give an excellent shave; leave the gel to soak on your face for 3 -5 minutes - as they are water based this will allow your whiskers to fully hydrate.
If you would like to add any oils (olive, jojoba, castor etc) with the gel, a very small dollop of shaving cream, or Proraso Pre/Post cream will emulsify the oils nicely into the gel - this makes the use of oils much cleaner (they rinse off well when emulsified).
Good luck with your shave
Have fun !
Best regards

Russ,
Well, it was a bit strange, but I shaved without having your information first. What I tried to was to heat the Astroglide up by microwaving it. What that did, now that I reconsider it, is steam the water out of it leaving something like jello behind.
I shaved with it anyway, if only for the first pass, and it seemed to do quite well. I found myself missing the lather if only because with it I was able to tell where I had shaved.
I started thinking I was in virgin (sorry, couldn't resist that one) territory, but now that I have your information I can penetrate (can't help it) further into Astroglide shaving. At the very least, it is a wonderful pre-shave oil, and I plan on continuing with it, but I doubt I'll be bragging about it much.

Thanked: 275Astroglide makes perfect sense. The lead ingredient is glycerin.
If you look here:
Making Überlather - Straight Razor Place Wiki
you'll find that glycerin is the "magic ingredient" in %C3%9Cberlather.
I've also tried using "Gun Oil" -- a silicone-based personal lube -- as a lather ingredient. It worked pretty well.
And now I'll give _my_ magic formula (in an independent post) --

Thanked: 2That's exactly how I built up confidence when I first started shaving with a straight. I didn't want to put pressure on myself to shave quickly before work so I'd start with the straight and finish the hard parts with a Fusion. Over the course of a couple weeks I slowly weaned myself from the Fusion.

Thanked: 0I've had a play with Extra Virgin Olive Oil as a pre-shave oil.
Now you've got me thinking about....

Well, I really did like the CF stuff, but all this talk is making me miss college, what w/ the free samples of the stuff @ the health center! Too bad I never got into straight shaving until later-- I could've gotten free pre-shave!
