Thread: Recommendations for pre-shave oil?

I purchased a bottle from the AOS - sandalwood essential oil, to be exact. I personally love the feel and fragrance.

I use hair conditioner and work it into my beard for at least a min and it works great i know its not an oil of any such but it gets the job done

I tried quite a few different things. Olive oil, which is OK but not great. AOS Pre-shave oil which I like the smell but little else. Nozema, better than the above, still not great. Hair conditioner, shaving goop in a can, and a couple others I think. But finally settled on Proraso pre-post creme. This stuff is like manna from heaven, it makes a huge difference in shave comfort and closeness and as a bonus you can use it post shave in the summer and menthol heaven!

Coconut oil works pretty well and is really cheap (for a shaving application). I have heard great things however about the Proraso. I am going to try that next, and they even have an extra sensitive variety for guys with faces like mine.

A cheap simple trick I learned a long time ago was Rise Baby Face Shave Gel.

I rub it in first, then lather over the top of it and it was wonderful. Used it ever since, especially on the 2nd pass.

Costs like 3$ for a 2oz tube that lasts months. It has a little baby oil in it, as well as other emoliants that all contribute to soft whiskers.

Keeps the razor burn and bumps down as well, which I have trouble with.

Gentlemen:
I have gone through a long list of pre-shave products. The oils I avoid. Most are greasy and make things slippery. I prefer Castle Forbes. Yes, it is a tad pricey, but I use it with each shave and think highly of it. On the other hand, I am still not convinced one needs a pre-shave product if one follows a standard proper preparation.

I have been going back and forth between udderly smooth and AoS lavender pre-shave. Then I put some lather over that and go to stropping my razor.

Do you start with pre shave or put it on before each pass?

Where do you get that?

T&H Pre-shave oil works well for me. I haven't tried other brands, FWIW.

Regarding the Rise Baby Face Shave Gel.

I got my first tube of it from Big Lots for like 1.39$. I have since found it on Amazon and other shops like Walgreens (occasionally they have it).

I think the 4 pack on amazon is a great deal.
