Yes, you still use soap. My routine when I use it is to apply to the face after a shower when the face/whiskers are wet, then whip up some soap, apply a hot towel to the face for a bit, apply the soap, then shave

I made my own pre shave oil from 30% castor oil, 70% grapeseed oil, and a few drops essential oil for scent. Like CATRENTSHAVING, I apply straight out of the shower while face is wet, then hot towel, then face lather. This step alone has done more for combating razor burn and nicks than any other step for me. It should be noted that I have dry skin, so the castor oil keeps my face moisturized for the duration of the shave. I have seen some posts where people apply the oil before every pass, but for me, once is enough. I understand everyone's needs vary, but if you have dry skin, this combo is amazing.

    Hope this helps.

    I too enjoy the T&H pre-shave oil...

On the first shave the difference I felt was hardly significant. But by the third use it was quite noticeable. It's been mentioned in other threads/forums that the effect seems to be cumulative - the more often you use it, the better the results. Given my own personal results, I agree - I believe it is actually softening and hydrating (e.g. protecting) the skin far more than softening the hairs. Whatever it is doing, the improvement is very worthwhile for me.

As much as I like T&H's though, the pre-shave balm from The Shave Den (they also have a menthol-ated version) works even better for me - and sweet heaven of mercy, does it ever smell good!

The T&H version carries the West India Limes scent (I have the SC, AS and EDC of the same scent). Of all the T&H products, it appears to be the only one carrying a particular scent that is not labelled with it.

It's a shame. It's really good stuff, but I don't like to mix scents; would much rather have it in the different fragrances.

I trickle hot water into a rolled up washcloth with the bottle of oil in the center while I shower, so when I get out the oil's warm. Even warm, the AoS pre-shave oil is a little thick.

Any non-oil based pre-shave lotions to recommend?
