I actually prefer these old ads. It's nice sometimes to see a well-spoken (or written) attempt to recommend a product without recourse to irony, cynicism, celebrity endorsement, stupid jingles and graphics, or attempts to create disingenuous associations. I can't vouch for their honesty and know there was plenty of deception, but the first ad at least doesn't seem all that false.

Prior to the 1940's infection was a serious issue that could result in death, and if the product was mostly alcohol then it would do almost everything they claim it does: eliminate germs, have a mild analgesic effect on razor burn, get rid of bad breath and work as an astringent. The only lie is that it softens your skin when it actually dries your skin.
