My preference is first with pure glycerin, which is completely water soluble. A quarter size in the palm slapped directly on the wet face before lathering is a superb protector.
My second choice is pure coconut oil which has a very low melting point (less than chocolate). It is also the only one that leaves no residue for me.
There are other good oils like avocado, olive, and others, but they tend to leave a residue because they are not very water soluble.
Enjoy

I used St. James of London pre-shave oil as well as Nivea and Nivea soft. I didn't feel they did any more tham moisturising and found no real benefit for shaving.
I'm with pixelfixed on this one, I haven't used any of those for quite a while and have not noticed any decline in shaving pleasure or comfort. But I guess they don't do any harm, and some others might add something, I don't know. I do tend to use soaps (mainly tallow-based) and creams with good moisturising and cushioning properties, so that might have something to do with it.
