Thread: Bruno's Blade Club

Oh damn. Why did I have to find this thread? My work shop is unheated so this will have to be a spring project. Lots of time to ponder designs.

Still have a lot of finish work to do on this blade but I finally got around to scaling it!

Just thought I'd post a quick shot of my newest razor from Bruno that arrived today.
I have honed thousands of Razors, but I must confess that I approached this piece of 17th century samurai sword steel with a bit of awe and respect!
Sounds silly, I know, but that's how it is.
I'll post the full story about it in a later post, now I will finish the honing of it and test-shave it.
All Japanese natural hones for steel like this,, anything else would be sacrilege!
A nakayama maruka suita with a full nagura progression finished on a slight haze of tomo-slurry to finish it off. And then a kanayama 90k stropping
Now off to test it!!

I recall when you first posted your thoughts around getting a piece of an old Samurai sword made into a razor and was fascinated. Now that it's complete, wow, and all honed on Japanese natural, no doubt the metal was expecting to be honed on such stone, I'm very interested in hearing about how it shaves. I can't imagine it being anything less than stellar, how could it not be.

That's a very nice historical piece of metal made into a gorgeous razor!!! To me, it is priceless. I would be very proud to own such a piece! There must be some history behind the sword it was made from. And of course you used all the right stones to hone it with which makes it even a more interesting razor. I can't find enough words to describe how I feel about such a piece of history that was converted into another very sharp tool to use on your face. They go back as early as 1185 & being 17th century steel it isn't silly to treat it the way you have. I would have the utmost respect for such an incredible piece of historical value. I can't wait to hear your story about it & the shave you got from it! That my friend is a very special treat for year to come. You are very lucky to have a friend like Bruno. He is truly an artist at what he does!
