im new to SRP but i have been stopping in to read just signed up today.
my first two razors are both shumate. i had a classic barber in great shape until my dremel took a sizeable nick out of the blade *tear*. rest in peace. Learn from my mistake only dremel from behind the spine. i just picked up shumate #222 today from an antique store. its got some medium pitting but i'll have her in shave shape in no time. and the dremel is staying on the bench for this one.

    Wink SHUMATE DAMAGE

Do you still have the damaged Shumate? I might be willing to take it out of sight from you. I had an ebay treasure mostly destroyed by USPS. I made a shorty shaver out of it. Let's make a deal!

I have four or five Shumates, one of them minty. I had it honed by Josh Earl, and had my first truly successful straight razor shave using it. I'll try to post some pics later, though none of mine are as nice as Glen's lovely collection.
First, a bit of history! I am descended from the Shumate family on my father's side. The name Shumate is an Americanization of the French name Chaumette.

I lucked onto a 4/8 Barber De Luxe. It is in near new condition. I don't know why but this little gem is my go to razor when I feel bbs is a must. Well, the why is because it shaves me best, but I don't know what is so different from my other honings, except this one has the smallest bevel. 2 of my other razors have an excess of hone wear and as such have much longer bevels....
I'm on the hunt for another like new shumate

    Smile Shumate Owner

Folks, I would like to join y'all. I just bought a Shumaate 5/8 Barber Deluxe. It should be ready in about 3 days. I am starting at square one for the renovation. It is in good shape, just some cleaning up and a fresh edge needed. Now I have a razor (St. Louis) to match my strop. The strop is an Austin, TX model which belonged to my Grandfather. I use it daily. I once owned a Sumate. The scales were of celluloid and self-destructed. I traded the razor for something shiny and have regretted it since. I am back with a Shumate and feel very grateful for the opportunity again. Thanks for having a club for us. Robert

Well the silly season is over and I have a bit of time again... between work trying to kill me off and being broke as all git up... I've kind of avoided some of my forums that tend to cost me $$$...

Durring the westcoast meeting I aquired an older Shumate that I'm cleaning up at the moment. A bit of honewear as well, so I'll be looking at the bevel and edge to see if I can flaten it out a touch. I'll be taking pics after I clean it up. Lovely scales and I hope I don't kill them in the proccess
