I am not parting with the Iwasakis, I sold one and I regret it to the day.

Happy to add this freshly cleaned up TOWA 1074 to my rotation. First true Japanese hollow ground for me. Honed up very nicely. Felt like good steel against the stones. Honed it up on all jnat's this time. Figured it was right to try on this one.

Test shave tomorrow.
:chapeau
Just added a 888 Hayashi Diamond. It doesn't require too much clean up, just a hone.

Well I'm new to Japanese straights. This is my first.
I'm told it's an Eiko. I don't know anything about them. Educate me please. Blind buy...
Any special instructions to hone this?
That is indeed an Eiko and should be a fine shaver:D
I cant see from the pictures but ive seen Eikos like that in both symmetrical and asymmetrical grinds, depends on the grind as to how you would hone it.
This is a NOS Hayashi Diamond that came back home last week after being away on holiday for a few months in the USA Idaho to be exact nice to see her back home with the rest of her family.

Lol I thought all Japanese straights were asymmetrical.
lol educate me!
Jamie, your Japanese straights are so beautiful they could make a grown man cry!
A lot of Japanese razors come with a western grind and are honed just like any straight razor. Kamisoris in scales seem to be a lot harder to come by and are honed accordingly. Either way you've got yourself a great razor made from (I think) yasuki white 2 steel and as I said should be a fine shaver.
Just put "yasuki steel" in the search box, there are loads more people more knowledgeable than myself but yasuki steel is made by Hitachi Metals using iron sand. For razors white steel and blue steel is mainly used. What that means to end uses is that white steel will take an edge more easily and blue steel will hold its edge longer.
A few new arrivals. First pic is a Suzumasa, probably newer production, no stamp on the tang or anything, other than the mark on the scales. I am still undecided on this one, but I received it as a gift, so really happy about that. It's a full hollow blade. Takes a good edge easily, but I am not sure whether it will retain it. After the first shave, I think it collapsed, with some micro chips appearing seemingly out of nowhere.
The second one is an Atlas No 17 FBU.. absolutely stunning, took me a while to set the bevel, but once I was done, the edge was amazing and so was the shave. It's a quarter hollow, this one... or near wedge, I guess that's the same thing.
My humble japanese collection now counts 3 straights [emoji4]
Pics didn't attach.. ;)
Thanks! ;) Let's try again.. Suzumasa:

This beauty should arrive in couple of weeks.
Iwasaki kamisori tamahagane.
During restoration they found out that jigane is made from British iron called Rentetsu, Namaji or Kamaji.
Below is part of mail sent buy restorer.
Your Kamisori happened to be using a Rentetsu material for the jigane (base iron), this is a late 1800s British*irons, used for construction materials, rails, anchors, boilers, etc. etc. from early to mid Meiji. It has a very nice damascus like layered pattern due to the old iron smelting technology, which could not melt the iron ore completely, hence could not remove all the impurities. But this is very beneficial for tools’ jigane material, that they are very brittle and easy to grind, and also has the mentioned handsome pattern.*

This is one of the simplest diagrams about Japanese papering of steel.
https://www.hidatool.com/image/data/...el%20Chart.pdf
There is also a green paper but not common in cutlery.
A quick OT. About 16 years ago I purchased a very nice pair of pruning shears from Hida Tool and Hardware (see the above link). I still remember the owner sending me a personal note. It began, "Dear Bill-sama." Pretty cool.
I shaved with my Hayashi for the first time this morning and had a wonderful shave.
Definitely a fan of Japanese straights.
I am looking for information on Hasegwa razors ( lone Wolf) and Daishi razors , from the most popular 350 to the less expensive 800. Can someone help me out with some info.
Thanks,
h
There is no real secret to rentetsu. It's basically wrought iron. It has a fibrous character from the silicate stringers and when etched gives a wood grain looking pattern. It's perfect for traditional cutlery as the smith would not have historically wasted good steel for the whole blade. He would have welded a "tooth" onto the wrought iron body, giving a hard edge to a soft backing material.
A couple of us had the great fortune to work with Yataiki when he came to the US a long time ago. He was especially happy with us because we brought some old anchor chain that he thought was some very nice iron to work with. His lessons were invaluable.
Picked up this FON razor pretty cheap. It cleaned up real nice.

What's happened to Zigzagpapa?
I see that he has no listings for sale.
This is my Kikuokan minus the grease (from Zigzagpapa incidentally - he has lots for sale, but sometimes he forgets to put down international shipping, so search for him on US ebay)

My last acquisition. I'm wondering if there is a way to bring back the color to the scales and are they safe?
I posted a reply to your question on FB, but here goes again for those that are not members of the group andmay run into similar situation.
The scales are Bakelite, it discolors like that from aging. First try metal polish and see if it will restore the original color, if not then sanding will clean it up for sure.
Ooh a covered tang towa! How nice
Can't complain and with very little hone wear to boot.
