White vinegar for a grey haze. The cold formula is best for black or blue. Be sure to get the Steel Black!

Reading this and given that I have some scrap metal in the form of straight razors (GDs), I will try to use ferric chloride and experiment with the saturation, temperature and exposure length.... I believe it's commonly used for damascus etching, I used it for PCB etching, so no doubt it will work.
Gunblack or steel black is obviously a sound choice.. probably the easiest and safest too.

Looks pretty the handle! For what is the loop? Should the Henkotsu still hang and ripe? Will it be better and sharper?:)
The Queen of my Japanese Collection, a Dairi No. 800 from the late 60s, maybe up to the mid-70s, 13/16" wide, made of one steel (instead of the traditional method) and it came nearly NOS, Sharpened on JNats by a real Honemaster, im happy as can be :y

Beautiful. Well done sir! :tu
I dont think I've ever seen a kamisori with ecthing, only stamps.
Do you know what kind of steel yours is made from?
Thank you :D
There are some similar Kamisoris that are on Ebay from time to time, most of them are similar to the Dairi but with gold etchings on the Blade without any stamps (Osho, Kikuboshi), there are also Kamisoris of this Type under Hoshimasa No.1 TM with stamps on the Omote Side of the Spine. I dont know wich kind of steel the Dairi is made off but im sure that its not made of Tamahagane, maybe its made of Yasuki Steel ?
I'm expecting this within the next coming week, not too bad at about half the price of a dovo.

Kikuboshi 6/8 rescaled in faux mother of pearl acrylic with bullseye washers. This thing honed up beautifully and gave an effortless two pass BBS shave. Great steel.

Now for this one worse comes to worse, I'll just salvage the scales. There is some pitting near the edge, but I'm banking on the fact that Japanese frameback razors are thicker than full hollows.Attachment 213061
You're sure on the roll with them jap's. Very nice blades.
I've received my Kanno Kikuboshi a while ago and it's a beast and a beauty at the same time. Killer shaver.

Another Boneyard Beauty in my Collection, a 11/16" MAGIC, i guess from the 60s, looks bad but shaves fine :-)

Well bought my first Japanese western style razor. Kinda a blind purchase.
http://m.ebay.com/itm/Vintage-Eiko-r...av=WON&trxId=0
Has anybody heard of a Eiko?
did I over pay for it?
I did say "slightly" :) There isn't a picture straight from the top from both sides, for instance. Spine wear is visible, but not obvious, I can tell it's uneven, now that I've had a second look. I think you will find the toe to be more honed out than the heel. I found this to be common in some japanese straights, although I havent been looking at them for a very long time, only for a few months. This means the width of the razor near the toe will be smaller than at the heel.. at least I'd think so, looking at the photos. Secondly, the lighting is poor.. but at least they havent used flash!
However, if the razor was perfect, it would have probably cost you 3 times that. So dont worry... tell us what you think when it arrives and maybe post some better pics.
Got a short japanese straight in the mail. Unfortunately it has been stopped at customs and I have to cough up a fair amount to get it to the house...such a shame. pics to follow!
Today i got this Mint Dairi, complete with its Package, i guess it was only one time sharpened after it was sold, had a very nice shave with it a few Minutes ago :-)
Does anyone know what the Kanji on the Package mean?
Could identify two Words as Dairi & Kamisori in Hiragana (?) but the first couple of signs i dont know.

Hi, give a look here:

:)
This is the razor I had in the mail - apologies for the rubbish lighting and razor smeared in oil. It is a kikuokan, and it is effectively a "shorty" with short blade, short tang! Handles very nicely, factory edge was ok, but needs a touch up.
Attachment 214609
Many Japanese blades are shorter than the equivalent blades over here. A two inch cutting surface is quite common on many of them and a 2 ½" edge or less is usual.

Yes - I suppose I meant it was a diminutive/scaled down razor. For example my other short blade razor has a normal length tang. This feels like a normal razor but shrunk in all of its dimensions. I suppose I haven't seen enough Japanese razors then!
I don’t own any, but have had my eye on a Daishi 350. I herd they are excellent shavers. Only the $$$ has kept me away.
