I’ll throw another spanner into the works!!

    Please Note:
I personally honed both razors of these razors discussed in this post!

I’ve had both a basic DOVO ($75) sent from a member due to lack of interest and a basic Revisor ($90) delivered to me from Germany and the Revisor is 10 times over the better shaver than the DOVO.

With this said I gave the DOVO to a mate in the UK and he was very appreciative and commented about how well it shaved! He then sent me a vintage blade that he’d purchased to cleanup and hone, when I returned it to him I told him that the vintage blade would shave circles around the DOVO!

He agreed!!! Don’t ask me what brand of blade it was as I don’t keep records! All I know is that all of my vintage blades ‘seem’ to take better edges and give better shaves than the basic DOVO did! The Revisor seems to hold its own!

Well enough gasoline thrown into the fire for now!

But all that goes to prove is that the one Dovo you honed was not very good. That's not a big enough sample to be statistically meaningful, and maybe if your experience had been the other way round you'd be making the same acclaim against Revisor. However, you are not the only one who has experienced a poor quality Dovo - they seem to figure quite often in complaints whereas as I said, Revisor get good reviews.

It just goes to show what a difficult question this is to answer.

    That is exactly my point!

While both razors were brand new one out performed the other, to add more fuel to the fire, a friend had ordered a different style of Revisor with me and his had problems!

While two identical twins may look exactly alike at birth and perhaps during their lives they will never be the same person, each will have their own special qualities and problems!

Let me jump in here...Cudarunner has honed my Dovo Bismark and test shaved it so he has a bit more experience than he is letting on.

As for me, the Dovo is my only new production razor. If I didn't follow a strict rotation, I would not use it, ever! It is pretty but I have far better shavers amongst my "vintage" steel.

He didn't say that the Dovo wasn't very good, he said the Revisor was just that much better.

I think some may be missing the point of the post...this is just a discussion on the little differences that we notice between similar razors. My Dovo is a conk branded BQ, and my Revisor is this one here 6/8 that cost $200 and what I would guess to be mid range. I do find it to be a little bit smoother than the Dovo.

cudarunner, you bring up interesting examples! Again we have a Revisor, even a basic price point of $90 at that, that is performing some measure of better than a basic price point Dovo.

Now, does this mean that Revisor makes better razors or razors of better value? Not necessarily. Does it suggest it? Perhaps.

There are no definitive answers, just personal experiences to share.

I remember I went through a phase of not liking Dovos compared to vintage razors, particularly when compared to vintage Sheffields.

But as time has passed I've modified that view a lot. I've found that Dovos, when dialled in properly, shave every bit as well any other razor I have and I have quite a few, though a new revisor doesn't feature as one of them.

I think Jimbo nailed it. With new production razors, barring any manufacturing defects, if both razors were dialed in there should be no huge difference between them. The big trick is to get a razor dialed in.

The Dovo just feels a bit chunky

Just a question to really toss some fuel on the fire here...

About how many razors of each brand do you think somebody would need to Hone and Test shave before they could supply a worthwhile opinion ???

That's an easy one, in keeping with the recurrent theme of RAD. All of them!
