Thanked: 1184Ever get a razor and wonder what it looked like new ? That is what a collector wants. Original condition. And if you have seen NOS you know how far from it all the others are.Look at how many razors get worked on multiple time. Or look at the older razors that no one is sure exactly what the original finish was or what scales they really came in. When A NOS one pops up you have a benchmark of what it is supposed to look like. I have no problem with those that hone a NOS razor and use it. I would hate to see someone customize a razor that was already perfect. If less than perfect sure might as well your not destroying any historic value.
Good judgment comes from experience, and experience....well that comes from poor judgment.

Because collectors are odd.

Someone who collects hones and does not hone razors? I've never of anyone doing that myself. Keeping something in true NOS unused condition makes perfect sense to collectors. When I was in heavy razor buying mode, I'd often thought that had I unlimited funds, I'd buy two of any new or NOS razor. One for honing and shaving and one for collecting. To each their own.

Another thing that crossed my mind regarding keeping a NOS razor unless you hone and shave with the razor how would you know if you were not holding on to a dud? maybe the steel or the grind or spine wasn't right the only true test that your razor is of any worth is to give it a go, so there's a big question mark in the back of your mind?

Why does it have to be about the money, a collection should be enjoyed for what it is, toys are for playing with, razors are for shaving with. Saying that I don't really collect anything, unless a lot of useful things that I use regularly count as a collection, in which case my tools are a collection I suppose.
