Grindworx SR
My wife got me a Damascus razor made by Grindworx for my birthday. I am just getting around to honing it and am curious if anyone knows anything about them.

Thanked: 1263Good luck with it is all I can say. Most quality Damascus razors sell for around 20x that price.
On a positive note, the thought was there on the part of your wife

That is what i was thinking. I can't seems to find much about Grindworx beyond their website and that doesn't really say much. On the upside I really like knives so even if I can't shave with it I have a really cool looking display piece.

I hope I'm wrong but I think that you've got something that looks like a straight razor but will really be no more than a letter opener. It looks like the cheap Pakistan Damascus.

other than the obvious price difference, how can you tell the difference? Just curious.

Thanked: 13245Honestly most of us that have been around for some time have seen these come and go over the years, basically not what you want to hear but Experience
The overall look of the razor and the fact that the blade geometry is off, besides we have seen this Pakistani junk Damascus way to many times

Experience seems to pretty much be the motto with anything to do with straight razor shaving. I have only been at it for a little less than a year so i am still learning a lot. I will post the results i get when i get it honed. Beyond that I probably need to start looking for a good straight. I am currently using a Gold Dollar i picked up on Amazon. I decided to use a straight cause i was fed up with buying replacement blades. I had no idea how enjoyable it was going to be or how amazing it feels.

Thanked: 3226Well, if you can hone up a Gold Dollar and get good shaves out of it you might stand a chance with the Grindworx. Be sure and let us know how you make out.

Update on the grindworx:
So far i have put in about 5 hours on my Norton 220 setting the bevel. It is a near wedge and the bevel is about 1/8' wide. seems like the sharpened it like a knife before. the metal seems to have a pretty good hardness to it so as long as it isn't super brittle then it may actually hold a decent edge. I still have a little work to do on the 220 cause the spine is a little funny so the last bit is taking some time.
If this turns out to be a POS then at least i learned that i enjoy honing and I got a lot of practice in.

Thanked: 12635 hours on a 220 grit hone to set a bevel should answer all your questions right there. If the metal is that hard then the edge will be extremely brittle and chip. I foresee a very uncomfortable shave in your future with that "razor"
