Thanked: 2I haven't been taping the spine. Will this help? Bevel is all over the place as when I bought it. Will get a pic up soon

Bevel does not look so bad in the pic above. Get a closer pic.

Thanked: 2As promised, this one is with 3 layers of tape. Looks better. What's the best way of knowing when I'm done on the 1k?

Thanked: 2So frustrating. The only way I can get an even bevel is with a rolling x stroke, but I can never get it sharp enough to pop hairs!

Marker just the bevel, not the whole blade, Trenchy! A bit of a rolling x will be required for that one. A bit of pressure on the 1k is used at times. ALSO do some circles, tip slightly up, heel slightly up, lying flat. Get the whole edge. Same number of circles on both sides. Swoop it some more! Get the entire edge! Might want to hit the hone on the dmt again. What kind of 1k is it?
Where are you located?? Might need some hands-on?"Don't be stubborn. You are missing out."
I rest my case.

Thanked: 2I'm between Buxton and London a lot. It's another toshi ohishi. I think I just need to practice my rolling x stroke.

Lots of guys around you! Might try to find a mentor? Sure makes things easier!
Most guys I try to teach smiling edges are hesitant to start a stroke with the toe up so the heel gets action, level and flat toward the middle of the stroke, Heel up high toward the end so the toe is not neglected. Smoothly transitioning. I get them doing it, and as I look back over, they seem to be getting flatter and flatter! Crack the whip and go 'SWOOP that sucker'!
Gets them back in line! Just try to get the whole bevel evenly. 3 layers is plenty much. Don't add more, I say! Use some circles, tip, heel, middle. Swoop to even out.
You will get it!"Don't be stubborn. You are missing out."
I rest my case.

Thanked: 2Ta mate. That's what I needed. How far off the hone should I be lifting the heel/toe then?
How will I know when it's ready? When it shaves arm hair?

Look at the heel. lift the toe, keeping the bottom of the spine in contact with the hone, till you see the rounded portion of the heel kissing the stone. Now lift the heel, keeping the top of the spine in contact with the hone, till the rounded portion of the tip contacts the hone. That is how much to go. It should pop an arm hair the entire length of the blade before moving on.
Sometimes, you must work a bit more on the heel, toe, or middle before all is right. Always blend it in.
Swoop, young man! SWOOP!"Don't be stubborn. You are missing out."
I rest my case.

When you say 'pop' arm hair, what do you mean?
