When you say 'pop' arm hair, what do you mean?
Pick out a hair, aim for it. Spine low, close to the arm. As you approach it, it should be cut! If it goes flying, that's the ticket! All along the edge!

So you mean a hanging hair test basically? Not just shaving my arm in. The normal way?

Either way, Trenchy. One hair cut all along the blade uses about 5. Saves other hairs!

Here's what it looks like. The bevel is in a smile one side and a frown the other! Still can't get it to pop hairs. So frustrating

your bevel has grown on the heel and toe. Perhaps too much pressure there. Change that top layer of tape. make certain no bubbles are in the tape. Is it frowning? Set it on something good and flat, see if you see light in the middle. If it is frowning, it will be a bear to straighten out!

What I mean is that the shape of the bevel has a smile one side and the other it has a frown. The actual edge has a slight smile though. I still can't get it sharp to pop hairsm. This is infuriating!

HA! Put it down and go at it again tomorrow, Trenchy! YOU have to be in charge, not the razor!
I know how you feel. We all have been there. Just got to back off and try some more later.

ok huys, I've finally come back to her. i noticed that there was an ever so slight frown. i bread knifed her on my 1k toishi, only took about 20 strokes before the middle wasn't showing any light through when placed on a straight item and held to the light. so now I'm back on the sweeping x strokes, but on one side in the middle, everything i fine, and on the other, the middle bit has a bevel that is tiny compared to the toe and heel. any ideas? as to me this seems like the razor is bent slightly now.

Some pics. You can see that one side, the bevel in the middle is the smallest , but on the other side it is the biggest! So bloody confusing!

That suggests that the spine is deformed - you can check by holding a straight edge either side. Choosing this razor for your first attempt at honing is unfortunate - if I were you I'd get something you know is OK and build up the basic honing skills first before attempting to master advanced methods.
