I know exactly what you mean!! In most areas of my life I am completely self taught ( including straight razor shaving)! I get a little helpful hand here and there. a little friendly advice, but on the whole I am self taught. As a result of being self taught I don't always have the words to adequately describe what I am trying to get across, as someone who was specifically schooled in a particular endeaver would! An unfortunate consequence is that it makes it difficult to teach others when needed.

I think there is a difference between modern and industrial. I like the idea of an industrial look a lot. To me industrial design is more about the materials used then the finish of them. There is a more unadorned look. Clean edges and sharp, contrasting lines. I would love to have a razor like that.

If you can, teaching yourself is the best way ---- I kind of have issue with authority figures and by-and-by usually end up teaching myself (due to my personality). But really I can't understand how it can be any other way -- you have a brain, the essentials of communication (reading and such), books etc, and a will and you're on your way. Plus when you teach yourself you tend to make mistakes more which is the best way to learn. Just believe in yourself mon ami .

Now we're burning with gasoline, Matt ---- I think we're defining it a little better.

Well, I am a designer by trade, so I need to have a clear idea of these sorts of things. I however, have been educated in these matters. That, and I generally like contemporary and industrial designs.

    I agree 100%!!!
I have found for myself though when I do learn on my own there is a lingering insecurity about whether I am doing properly or not, but that usually clears its self up in no time!!

I also agree. I have been educated in design, but my formal education was always in the way of learning by doing. We were given assignments and then told to figure out how to do them. If we had trouble we could always come to the teachers, and they would critique our work and tell us how to improve certain things, but generally we learned by doing.

As far as web design, I am completely self taught.

Was that a - gasp - quote from Thumbelina?

I understand better now too - industrial is good. Modern - bad (as it relates to shaving implements, I mean)

I see Matt proved my point in regards to schooling!!
Although when one is capable I think it is infinately better to be self taught. you remain yourself instead of becoming somebody elses drone!!
