I have a Japanese Deba for use. Help with the translation of kenji.Attachment 312999Attachment 313000Attachment 313001
Can anyone translate the kanji in the picture?
Thanks in advance
Attachment 314520
Any ideas on this one?
It should be the maker's name or brand: "Kawashima"
First, thank you so much to those who translate, and have been doing so time and time again!
I just picked up my first two kamasori, and am curious about the markings. I am hoping someone can tell me what this all mean.
First up is a Inoue Tosuke:

And a Henkotsu:

Any help is appreciated!
Found on side of old jnat.

OK, so I figured out most of the Tosuke. I am only missing the top 2 or three characters now... I believe its trying to say how it was forged, or what it is forged with, as I know "forged" is that last kanji in the top set. Anyone know what the rest of the top says?
And for this guy, I know all of it except where the 4 kanji in a square are. I know the two on the right hand side of that square are "trade mark", but I dont know the left two.Quote:
Thanks again!
Well, I guess it could be 一本鋼打 where 一本 should be Ippon - Japanese, so Japanese steel! Duh... :rofl2:
So a Japanese razor made of Japanese steel, made in Japan...
OK, second = 登録商標 = tōroku shōhyō = registered trademark
登録 = Tōroku = Register
商標 = Shōhyō = Trademark
You're welcome, nice job on figuring it out!
Sasa it is!
Whatever that means...
In the knife world, sasanoa is ‘bamboo leaf’ shaped, just as a yanagiba is ‘willow leaf’ shaped. A sasanoa is about halfway in blade width between a gyuto and a yanagiba.

I suppose that it could also be a name, the Aesop lather bowls are actually part of a Sori Yanagi brand set of bowls, and Yanagi means willow.
According to Alex Sasa is a word or partial of a word that means nothing by itself. Interesting that it is on an old hoard stone though.
This is a kamisori that I got from Alex on the Sonoma trip. Anyone have any idea what the stamped or printed kanji say? I can get different images if it would help.
Thanks, Steve
Can anyone help with this, thank you!

翁 = Okina :D
Thanks, I was just going to post that is a okina Kataha.
Kinda hard to get a good pic of this, it's a whole lot of Kanji crammed into just 18mm
(and a whole lot of hone wear too, i know, but blame younger me for not knowing any better and buying it like that lol)

Hi, done with pleasure!
Well, normally 撰 stands for "selected" but for now I'm not sure what 丸 (maru) stands for...
Maru in a way stands for a circle, which on its own, if I'm not mistaken, sometimes stands for (high) quality - best, ...,
but I cannot be sure in this context if this means "high quality" - "selected" or something...
Interesting, thank you!
I had wondered if there might be any more beneath the wrap, as the last character starts to disappear under it....but the wrap is in such great condition, i wouldn't want to remove it just to find out
Well, 99,99% sure there isn't an extra kanji under there, so leave it on I would say 😉
Fikira, nice to see you are doing well! I got this Iwasaki and It seems a little different than others I have seen. Could you please help me by translating what the kanji says.
In the one picture I put my Nakayama kurumaguchi you helped me identify. Your website is a great asset to this community and the only place I have found any information on my stone. It is indeed RARE as I have found two other exaples. I am trully greatfull for your help as I would be a lot more in the dark if not for your wedsite. I try to tell as many people I can to go to your site as to me it is THE source I go to first.Attachment 323887Attachment 323888Attachment 323889
Hi Toroblanco!
Thank you! Well, latest months I can send lot less time into to it, but still here! :D Glad you are doing fine as well, and thank you so much for the compliments! Much appreciated!
Not a lot know about this, but what I've found is that 炭素鋼 = Tanso-kō = (Pure) Carbon Steel), I know Shigeyoshi-san did many experiments in developing
a steel trying to supersede Tamahagane and this 炭素鋼 was one of them. Also because Shigeyoshi-san was more into straight razors, I would think this one is made by him.
At https://historyrazors.wordpress.com/2016/12/08/iwasaki/, chapter 'Western razors – Straight Razors
‘Others’' there are a few more examples.
On the tang, there isn't maybe a Kamijo stamp?
Thanks for sharing!
:beer1:
Wow! I found my razor on that page SN#2771. It made me feel like a kid again! Lol!
Sadly I could not find a Kamijo stamp but if I understand you right it is most likely from a special batch of steel made by the Iwasakisan and Kamijosan trying to supercede tamahagane steel which to me is very special. I purchased from well known Japan based seller and was surprized he knew little about those stamps. I asked him before I purchased and I am glad I still purchased the razor.
I tried many ways to find Kamijo stamp trace but did not find anything. I took pictures and put different filters and did the blue dye but no luck. Taking the dye off left it very shiny so it was like a deep cleaning.
Thank you Fikira for your invaluable help and for the wealth of information on you website.
Keep up the great job!

My two treasures! I am very proud to own these two!
Can anyone help me with the Japanese marks on my new Henkotsu Kamisori.
I figured out from different threads that it is most likely a Henkotsu. Attachment 325461
Anyone can say something about this?
It's a 7/8" Friede 510 Frameback straight.
Thanks! ;-)

That looks like a traditional Chinese razor used to shave the head in the hairstyle called the Queue, shaved at the front and sides and long plated ponytail at the back. It’s rather like the Japanese using a kamisori to shave the Chronmage.
Thank You. I'm looking the maker .
Without a makers stamp you’ll be hard pressed to learn the maker. Someone might be able to help. Oh and welcome to SRP.
Thank You.
Maker stamp is on second pic.

Wow, for once I see kanjis I can remember.
Hishakaku (Hi-Sha-Kaku)
Interestingly enough, the Hisha and the Kaku are the most powerful pieces of the traditionnal japanese chess (shogi) moving respectively like the rook and the bishop, and you start with one of each only (but then again shogi plays like a regular shonen manga, with changes of allegiances, back stabbing and "this is not even my final form" power evolution)
Thank you so much! It's really very interesting. But what the inscription on another side of tang and on a tail? Thank you
