This is interesting.
I spent about 3 hours yesterday honing this beast + one more hour because I wanted to polish it properly and get rid of the horrible spine wear I had to create to get it straight. Now it sits on the hones properly and looks alright, too. The ugly etching is gone. Shaves just fine, obviously it's not the greatest, but I liked it and it got me BBS... hmmmm nice little <insert car maker/brand here>, got me from A to B.
I had bought 4, intending to keep one for myself and sell the 3 to some people who wanted them. This was agreed, I decided to sell for $12-ish, local shipping included. I'm "making" around $5 a piece... I guess it's not necessary to elaborate on the use of quotes
No single person has the kind of time to put GD modders out of business, I'm afraid. I do like your idea, but it would have to be a collective action. If 100 SRP members took 5 each, that would perhaps create a stir. Repeat..... once in 3 months? Time is an issue.
On the other hand this will not put a stop to the Gold Dollar production. Only one thing will: a maker that comes along with a competitive price at significantly higher quality in the finishing stage. The steel could even stay the same, but fix the geometry and maintain the unit cost and you've got a winner.... problem is, the modders will come along as well and their jobs will get much more creative and much less of a chore.
Well, anyway, my 2 cents only. I'm not bothered by the GD and neither should anyone else be. It's like saying you'd want production of budget cars to stop... why?? It's much like any other market segment. It has its customers, that's it.As the time passes, so we learn.

IMO,, this statement of yours says it all when it comes to Gold Dollars, "I spent about 3 hours yesterday honing this beast,,,"
If a razor takes 3 hours honing to bring shave ready, then you have a problem razor. I am not the best honer by far, but 30 to 45 minutes tops, on any of my razors from a bevel set.
I actually hope that Gold Dollars stay in the market; it keeps newbees from butchering the good vintage razors that surface from time to time.

Yes, it definity was a problem blade. An inch length at the heel would not even touch the hone... just a horrible example. None of the 4 are even close to shave ready and none will sit on the hones even remotely flat. I am very surprised by a few posts here stating a high percentage of shave ready blades out-of-the-box.
EDIT: Mind you, this was my very first attempt at it.As the time passes, so we learn.

Never having seen a GD in real life I have followed this discussion with great interest.
To me it seems like if you consider buying a GD you have to ask yourself one question: "Do I feel lucky?"Plus ça change, plus c'est la même chose. Jean-Baptiste Alphonse Karr.
